Pierre Noth, editorial page editor

Pierre Noth

Pierre-Rene Noth has been editorial-page editor of the Rome News-Tribune since 1991 and editor of Past Times magazine since 1989.

Born in Aix-en-Provence, France, he came to the United States in 1941 as a refugee from World War II and is a graduate of the School of Journalism of the University of Oklahoma.

After working on newspapers in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, he joined the copy desk of The Milwaukee Journal, later becoming assistant news editor and then national/world editor. He was also that newspaper's first rock music columnist and its first chess columnist. After 13 years at the Journal, he became managing editor of the Waukegan (Ill.) News-Sun, remaining there seven years until coming to the Rome New-Tribune as deputy editor.

He currently has the responsibility of writing all editorials for the Rome News-Tribune and directing its editorial page, as well as its annual magazine devoted to regional history.

In 1991, Noth won the freedom of information award of the National Newspaper Association. In 1992, he received the Herrick Award of the National Newspaper Association for his editorials in the defense of democracy and several times has won NNA first places in editorial writing. Past Times magazine has been named the best special issue in the state by the Georgia Press Association for 10 of its 19 issues. It has three times won the George Washington Medal of the Freedoms Foundation.

The Rome News-Tribune editorial page has several times been named the best in the state for its circulation category by the GPA and Noth has won several first places in the GPA competition for the best editorial writing in the state. His editorials, and the editorial page, have several times won first place in the annual National Newspaper Association's "Better Newspapers" competition.

In addition, Noth has taught journalism courses at Shorter College and Berry College in Rome and been Radford Visiting Professor at Baylor University.
