Jeff O’Bryant: Sarah Palin -- Tougher in Alaska
Wednesday September 10, 2008 6:48:48am
Little experience, virtually no knowledge of foreign policy and half the country despises the candidate. So the New York Times could have, quite rightly, written about Abraham Lincoln in 1860. We all know how that turned out. Now enter Sarah Palin, nearly 150 years later, and just like the Great Emancipator, both her mind and heart are in the right place on the issues that face the nation, including the single most divisive one.
But this is not about abortion, the slavery issue of modern times, only worse, as hard as it is to imagine something more horrible than the practice of owning other human beings. Rather, this is about the fitness of Sarah Palin to be vice president or president and the terror of the entrenched liberal establishment at the thought of her being one heartbeat away from the presidency.
These liberal interest groups are threatened by Palin’s moral outlook, her sense of family values, and her willingness to fight established and failing government. They have relentlessly attacked Palin since day one of McCain’s VP announcement in an effort to protect their debauched beliefs and the degenerate government that currently protects those beliefs. Indeed, they will say and do anything to cast doubts on Palin’s abilities.
Sally Quinn, an elitist Washington Post reporter, wrote that McCain picked Palin only because she is a woman and would appeal to Americans with morals (not exactly how she worded it, but nevertheless accurate). Even if that were McCain’s only reasons for choosing Palin, these motives stand up at least as well as those of Democrats who selected Obama just because he is African American and has a sparkling personality.
Alan Colmes, the token liberal that Fox News keeps around to shock thinking viewers with whiny snippets and crazy liberal ideas, suggested on his blog that Palin’s baby has Down Syndrome because Palin did not immediately rush to the hospital after amniotic fluid began to leak. Ignoring the fact that Colmes is okay with smashing an unborn baby’s skull in and sucking its brains out, one still has to wonder, even if this claim were true (which, medically, it isn’t), why Colmes would bring the subject up. It goes beyond being merely tasteless, thoughtless and cruel; it was deliberately meant to suggest that she’s not capable of being a mother and, therefore, certainly not fit to be vice president or president.
Andrea Mitchell of NBC said Republicans think they can pull in Hillary Clinton supporters to vote for Palin but only the “the working class women, not college educated.” But for a liberal, education is merely a euphemism for indoctrination; one of the key ways communism, socialism and liberalism itself are able to survive and subjugate people. Education aside, if you can but think for yourself, believe in liberty and freedom, and understand that you and not government can better manage your money then you already have enough knowledge to know that you can’t possibly cast your vote for Obama.
Perhaps the most ridiculous slur against Palin was the comment by David Letterman suggesting she and her family belongs on “The Jerry Springer Show.” Her unwed but pregnant daughter, since she decided to accept responsibility for her actions and not murder her unborn child, somehow deserves derision for being accountable for her actions?
What the mainstream media says aside, the real Sarah Palin is an inspiring individual who has effectively governed the state of Alaska. She is currently the most popular governor in America with an approval rating in the 80s. Only people who are successful achieve such ratings (which explain why the Democratically controlled Congress has sustained approval ratings at historic lows).
Palin successfully cut big government spending in Alaska, vetoing roughly half a billion dollars of wasteful spending. She stood up to members of her own party for their ethical violations and corrupt dealings, emphasizing honest, open government. Further, she understands that it isn’t so much that the environment needs to be protected from the people but rather that the people need to be protected from the environmental crazies. For all the whining this fringe group of tree-huggers does — and who have fought to keep gas prices high for their fellow Americans by preventing any drilling in ANWR to protect caribou — I found it delightfully ironic that Palin’s parents interrupted their caribou hunting trip to hear their daughter’s VP announcement. May their next trip be very successful.
Perhaps most importantly she did not discuss working with people in her acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. She did not speak on seeking consensus with liberals. She did not speak about getting along and coming together. She spoke about fighting and defeating not only America’s enemies but the status quo as well. She became governor in Alaska to take “on the old politics as usual. . .” to “stand up to the special interests and the lobbyists and the big oil companies and the good old boys,” she said.
And this isn’t just talk. She’s taken out fellow Republicans, trounced rivals, and slaughtered enemies. Dave Dittman, who worked for her campaign for governor, said that “the landscape is littered with the bodies of those who crossed Sarah.” Imagine such a force in Washington, D.C., where the political landscape of Capitol Hill is littered with the likes of Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and all the other members of the anti-American, tax-and-spend, socialist, surrender-now crowd. Along the way, maybe she can lay low some of the problem children in the Republicans’ own camp: Chuck Hagel and Olympia Snowe come to mind.
The maverick and this tough, take-no-prisoners Alaskan belong in the White House and provide a clear contrast to the Democratic offering: the newbie and the loudmouth.

Jeff,I find in extremely amusing that you are now the recipient of slurs, and insults, delivered by those presuming to chastise you for name calling. I see no place in your article where any such charge could possibly be merited, but facts seldom have much to do with what a fully indoctrinated liberal might say. What I do see in your article is a fair representation of the common drivel spouted by the media's pet liberals. The depth of "indoctrination" which has gone on in our public schools, far too long, is clearly evident in the way these people go after anyone with an ounce of free thought remaining, like sharks going after a wounded seal. I particularly like the paragraph you wrote about Andrea Mitchell, and especially the sentence below. "Education aside, if you can but think for yourself, believe in liberty and freedom, and understand that you and not government can better manage your money then you already have enough knowledge to know that you can’t possibly cast your vote for Obama." Liberty, and freedom, and a little something called "independence", all take some backbone. These people want a government that will take care of them from "cradle to grave", the exact opposite. |

Dear Jeff,First off I have to say that I was expecting more out of a man with your education. You seem to have fallen into the trap of having to use name calling and insults to make a point. Why is it you feel the need to denigrate those who have a different point of view then you do? Is this you way of showing your own insecurities? In any case, it makes any valid point you might have had almost impossible to find. Now as far as the great Sarah Palin. The fact that she is as far to the right as anyone in recent political history makes her unappealing to those in the middle. Let's face it, after the last 8 years of having the religious right in control of the executive branch of out government, the American population is looking for a change. More people are worried about loosing their jobs, and not as worried if Bob & Joe plan on getting married. As for her stand on social issues, I find her to be somewhat of a hypocrite. The fact that she is a big supporter of abstinence only programs and is against birth control is negated by the fact that she was unable to make that work in her own family. If it worked, then her own teenage daughter would not be pregnant now. If she would have taught her daughter the need for contraception if she had chosen to partake in premarital sex, then she would not be pregnant and would not be forced into a marriage at an age when she should be going to high school dances. As a father of 5 kids, including one daughter, I will teach her to respect herself enough to not engage in premarital sex, but in the case that she does, the importance and need for the use of condoms. Not just to protect her from getting pregnant, but to protect her from getting a STD. I guess Sarah Palin should be thankful that her daughter does not have to deal with that on top of getting pregnant. You use the people who are trying to keep drilling out of ANWAR as a way to show her priorities. You make the claim that those who wish to protect that environmentally sensitive area as wanting to keep gas prices high. Well, let me make this point. If we were to be able to drain all the possible oil out of ANWAR tomorrow, it would not stop us from being reliant on foreign oil. With only 3% of the worlds oil reserve in our control, and the fact we use 25%, unless we reduce our demand then we will always be beholden to the foreign producers of oil. A better option would be to demand that all public utility vehicles be converted to use CNG in place of normal gas or diesel fuel. We have in this country a massive supply of CNG and a massive distribution system already in place. This is not a new technology as it was put into use in my old home town as a test program over 20 years ago. Yes, we need to increase our domestic oil production, but it will never be enough to make a change in price at the pump and if it did, the change would be pennies. On her record. She claims to have stopped the "Bridge to Nowhere" but that is a complete falsehood. All during her campaign for her current position, she was vocal in support for this project to the point of saying that now was a good time since their congressional delegation was is a position to help pass it through. It was only when the US congress had all but killed the project did she jump on the band wagon and even then she kept the money and sued it on other projects. While mayor of her home town she hired lobbyist to help her get millions in ear marks for her town. Now she expects us all to believe that she is and has always been against them? Unless you suspend common sense, anyone can see this as nothing but a political talking point. On foreign affairs she has no experience at all. Contrary to her belief that because she can see Russia from Alaska she has experience is just plain nuts! I have an uncle who lives on the US Mexico boarder, does this make him experienced in Foreign affairs? No, and neither is she. On the economy, she has yet to put forth one idea on how to fix our national economic problems. All she has done is to parrot the talking points of the republican party. Those economic theories are the standard trickle down economics, which if you look into history, has never worked. The only tried and true way to build a strong economy is from the ground up, just like a house. You don't build the roof and work down from there, do you? You and others like you keep claiming that the democrats want to take money from the average person and hand it to the poor. This is just a false talking point. The idea is to roll back the massive tax beaks for the very rich and large corporations that Bush passed and McCain supported, and replace them with tax breaks for the middle class. Those in the middle class would use that money to buy goods and services which in turn means jobs to create those goods and services. Those jobs that get created increase tax revenue as well as create more spendable income into the economy. Giving more to the rich does not put that into the economy, but rather into their savings. They are not going to spend more just because they have even more money, they just hoard it away and get richer. I will end this by saying that if everyone would look at what in really important to them in the coming four years, like a good job, health insurance and a good educational system, then they will vote for Obama. If stopping gay marriage and stem cell research is more important then keeping your job, then vote McCain / Palin. |

I was watching the news yesterday and saw Sarah Palin concluding a speech with "Thanks guys, love you all" so perky, like she was running for Miss Congeniality at a beauty pageant or perhaps PTA president. On second thought, every PTA president I've ever seen handled themselves in a more businesslike manner. Folks, this is a serious job. We need serious candidates. You need to think long and hard about the consequences of something happening to Sen. McCain if he is elected. Do you really, honestly think that Ms Palin can represent our country with the other leaders of the world? Just because you are a Republican doesn't mean that you shouldn't realize that Republicans can make mistakes. As a Democrat, I know that mistakes were made in the Carter administration. I admit it , and you should be cringing at the sight of Ms Palin trying to give an interview. What if she were our president trying to avert a crisis? And Mr O'Bryant..your remark about the Palin parents delightfully, ironically, interrupting their caribou hunting trip to attend the VP announcement was asinine. |

I agree. Wouldn't Condoleezza Rice have made a more qualified candidate if McCain just had to have a female running mate? Or, was he just focusing on her beauty and money as he did when he divorced his first wife for pretty little Cindy after he came back from Vietnam and his first wife had been injured in a traffic accident and didn't look the same? |

Well, it didn't take long for that star to fizzle out. Her interview with Katie Couric on CBS News was simply embarrassing. It was quite evident that she was a nervous wreck and way out of her league when dealing with the media about this campaign, and especially about foreign policy. She still thinks that being able to see Russia from her house qualifies as a foreign policy credential. I truly hope for the sake of keeping her remaining dignity, that she drops out before her debate with Joe Biden. It's like watching a defenseless lamb going into a lion's den. I feel sorry for her that she is being used by McCain as a political stunt. I think she is a nice lady and deserves better. |

"Her unwed but pregnant daughter, since she DECIDED to accept responsibility for her actions and not murder her unborn child, somehow deserves derision for being accountable for her actions?"Interesting CHOICE of word there, Jeffers. You are right that Dems are making a mountain out of this Caribou Barbie molehill. But they'll get over it when they realize the foam is frothing mostly from the mouths of the Phyllis Schlafly fan club. It's a non-issue - prepare ye the way for (at least) eight years of Democratic rule, and be great to STILL have a government that STILL thinks all women deserve the right to choose like Palin's daughter was ostensibly. |

Slynay, did you by any chance visit the site you directed us to? I did. www.tshirthell.com is a vile, nasty site with t-shirts that no decent person would purchase. I saw nothing on the site that would lead someone to believe it belonged to Obama supporters. Probably the owner of the company doesn't even vote. I didn't even see that shirt. For those of you who have not visited the site, first of all when I copied and pasted the link Slynay posted it took me to a search engine , so I entered www.tshirthell.com without the rest of the link. The site is an online store, and every other t-shirt for sale contained the F word on the graphic. Instead of constantly posting anti Obama spam Slynay, why don't you instead post the platform of whatever candidate you are supporting? I can truthfully say that hardly a day goes by that there is not something in my inbox that is anti-Obama and easily disproved, but not once have I received an anti McCain message. What does that tell you? It tells me that the Democrats are busy spreading the positive message of truth about our candidate rather than spending our time posting spam about our opponent. |

Slynay.........My sincere and immediate hope is that you will simply get a life. The site you posted a link to is simply idiotic trash and not worth looking at. People who publish sites such as that are not necessarily Obama supporters, but simply people who want attention no matter what the cost, no matter what they say. Sound familiar? They could be republicans who don't like Palin. They could just be people who have nothing better to do with their time but post garbage on the internet as you seem intent on doing here. Go ahead and blame that trash on "empty-headed democrats" as you have once referred to us as. I, for one, am tiring rapidly of the trash you're putting out, but you know what? It's your right to do that. If you've got nothing better to do with your time than visit sites like the one you posted the link to, it may be time to re-evaluate your priorities as to what you do with your free time. Does it sound like you've hit a nerve? You're very observant. Misguided, but observant. VWN |

I agree toosa but I try to be kind. After all, I am not from here and some of the accents are annoying and some people I just don't understand. Different parts of the country have different ways of saying the same thing. Around here, everything is a Coke, even if it's Pepsi. One of the problems I have with her is the fact that she says she will not cooperate in the investigation of her firing of the Chief Public Safety officer. They want to question her husband because apparently he was putting pressure on people to get a State Trooper fired. This man was married to her sister. There is a lot more involved which I will not get into. I will take the newbie and the loudmouth over the old man and the Alaskan redneck! |

Unbelievable! Is this what our country has come to? This woman is completely clueless! After listening to her speak in the ABC News interviews, I am really afraid for the future of this country now. If the American voters have this become this superficial and elect McPalin based on her likeability and her appearance, then God help us all. Her interview reminded me of the Miss South Carolina interview a few years ago (that bubble-headed blonde who was just saying words to get through the interview). Here is a transcript (edited for your entertainment): Charlie Gibson (interviewing Sarah Palin): Do you support the Bush Doctrine? Sarah Palin (blank stare on her face): How do you mean, Charlie? Charlie Gibson: (slightly impatient look on his face): Do you support the Bush Doctrine? Sarah Palin (blank stare...squirming a little...straining for prepared sound bite that has nothing to do with the Bush Doctrine...thinking....umm...mooseburger..arrggharaghhh)... LOL |

I think she was chosen mainly because she is attractive. That will get many votes from ignorant people."hottest governor in the US" I believe many signs said. Yeah, that's the ticket as they used to say on Saturday Night Live. As if we didn't have a trainload of problems facing us in America. |

Can' t agree with you evan. He was throwing her softballs. Why not Barbara Walters as the interviewer? Reason is that she would have her speaking gibberish which is pretty much what she speaks now. She would set the women's rights movement back to the 50's. Somehow I can't see her face to face with world leaders talking about economics or foreign policy. If he wanted to pick a woman, couldn't they find someone who is a little more educated in what goes on in the world? I'm not a big fan of Hillary Clinton but she knows what is going on. |

If she is left on her own, I don't think Sarah Palin can give a good showing. I was not impressed with her speaking ability and I find her grating on my nerves. She is no Abraham Lincoln and never will be. While Lincoln was unpopular in his time, he had a much better understanding of what made the country what it was. Lincoln was very well spoken and a great debator. I doubt that she has the ability to speak about policy without a script. |

I'm looking forward to hearing Palin debate Biden. So far, she keeps repeating the same old lines from the convention, and does seem to give uninformed answers when she takes questions. I'll be very disappointed if the debate centers around anything other than the real problems the country faces. We don't need questions about family - we need questions about the economy. We don't need questions about babies - we need questions about healthcare. How would either Palin or Biden handle Pakistan? What are their ideas on our education system? |

Sarah Palin won't get any Hillary voters unless the only reason some would have voted for Hillary is that she is female. The two women are worlds apart in every aspect of the issues. Can you imagine Hillary Clinton attending a church that speaks in tongues and denies evolution? Palin, along with her belief in the "Rapture", believes God has plans for wars and pipelines! So far, Palin has only uttered words scripted by speach writers and has repeated the same phrases and claims dozens of times. When she goes off script, she makes mistakes. They are shielding her from normal media exposure such as "Meet the Press" simply because they haven't finished trying to train her. She's definitely a wild card, and I think it will come back to bite McCain. |

Hey! I heard today that Hugh Hefner and his girlfriend were breaking up. What's the deal? Is McCain already looking for his Secretary of State? |

So far, the only thing I've heard is that she is a hockey mom who wears lipstick. Is this really the best that McSame can come up with? Gimme a break. This has gone beyond ridiculous. The only change I've seen these 2 deliver is to change her attitude toward earmarks, which she supported while running for governor. |

Cleanup a quagmire in Washington DC?Who better than an Alaskan who has previous experience walking on such ground. Well, all those corrupt politicians should be running scared, scared enough to criticize with out abandon the potential candidate. |

OK you asked for this I have watched politicians tell of all the good things they were going to do before being elected, only to be let down afterward. So far I've not heard any promises from S. Palin but even if she does promise something and don't do it, atleast we'll get to see a hot babe on TV while she's lyin to us, LOL |
