Jeannie Babb Taylor: Palin pros and cons
Wednesday September 17, 2008 5:26:03am
Several readers have asked me to weigh in on the selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as Sen. John McCain’s vice presidential running mate. The way I see it, there are pros and cons to the Palin pick.
PRO – She’s a woman. More than 50% of voters are women, and we are seriously underrepresented in American government.
CON – She’s against women. Palin is part of the most extremist anti-woman platform the Republicans have put forth in years. These Republicans are on the warpath, trying to limit access to ordinary contraceptive methods like the birth control pill, which the majority of American women depend on at some point in their lives. Palin is right in with this crowd, going on record to state that she is against abortion even in the case of rape or incest.
PRO – The restoration of a female to this election could appeal to some voters who are disillusioned over Hillary’s primary loss.
CON – Palin is no Hillary Clinton. Palin’s resume is so thin, it actually includes her high school basketball “career.” She is a one-term governor of the fourth-smallest state by population, and before that she was the mayor of a town smaller than Fort Oglethorpe. Most Americans only heard of her last week. She is best known as the bee-hived governor who was almost Miss Alaska. She has no experience outside the state, much less with foreign affairs. According to the New York Times, Palin only got her passport in July 2007. Even then, she did not visit Iraq as she has claimed.
By contrast, Hillary Clinton is a serious, seasoned political leader known all around the world. It’s not just the age difference. Since her twenties, Clinton has been featured in publications like Life Magazine. She attracted attention not for beauty pageants but for historic accomplishments, like being the first Wellesley student to deliver the commencement address and using that opportunity to criticize the senator who spoke just before she did.
While Republicans hail Palin as a reformer, it is Clinton who is a true crusader. Hillary was a force to be reckoned with even before she teamed up with Bill. In the late sixties, she fought for civil rights, and in the seventies she helped impeach Richard Nixon. In the eighties, while Palin was strutting down the runway in a bikini, Clinton was fighting for education reform in Arkansas and being named Mother of the Year for the second time.
As First Lady for two terms in the nineties, Clinton was so active in domestic and foreign affairs that critics printed bumper stickers reading “Impeach the President and her husband, too.”
Clinton’s greatest obstacle is being ahead of her time. Consider her bid to reform health care. As First Lady she was unable to make it happen, but that plan is now integral to the Democratic platform. That’s what reformers do; they change the way we think about the world. Simply challenging an incumbent in your own party doesn’t make you a reformer.
The differences go beyond education and experience; Palin opposes everything Hillary Clinton stands for — health care, education, individual freedoms and economic security for the middle class.
McCain must think women are stupid. He hopes to win Clinton supporters simply by adding a woman to his ticket. Some men may believe that all females are interchangeable; women know better.
PRO – Palin is a Washington outsider. After eight years of Republican corruption, lies and unjust war, many Americans are looking outside the Capitol for a fresh leader without ties, allegiances and debts.
CON – She is not just an outsider; she has absolutely no national experience. Republicans try to brush this away by pointing out that Obama has never been a governor and therefore has no “executive” experience — but the same can be said for McCain. If Palin is more qualified than Obama, then she is also more qualified than McCain. The Republicans need to reverse their ticket! The truth is, Sarah Palin is the least experienced candidate put forth in recent history. The presidency is far too important to risk on a loose cannon like McCain and a complete unknown like Palin.
PRO – A short resume means less baggage . . . right?
CON – For a politician with such a short history, Palin has been remarkably quick to immerse herself in scandalous abuses of power. Currently she is under investigation for trying to force the firing of her ex-brother-in-law as a favor to her sister.
As governor of Alaska, she has held her hand out for plenty of pork. Palin claims she opposed the infamous “Bridge to Nowhere.” Not true. Support for the bridge was part of her campaign platform. She only gave up on it after Washington turned against the project. Then she canceled the bridge, but kept most of the money for other projects. Although she claims she opposes earmarks, she has requested more per capita than any other governor.
While requesting federal dollars to study the mating habits of crabs, Palin used her line-item veto power to slash important funding for education and teen pregnancy prevention. She opposes teaching teens about condoms in spite of statistical and now personal evidence that “abstinence only” education has poor results.
Palin has an interesting strategy on changing Alaska’s status as the rape capital of America: discourage victims from reporting. Under Mayor Palin, Wasilla women who reported rape had to pay for the cost of the forensic exam, reportedly a charge of $300-1,200. Charging women who report sex crimes is a sure way to reduce rape — well, rape reports, anyway.
PRO – Palin is an avid outdoorswoman, giving her a tough, not-afraid-to-get-her-hands-dirty image.
CON – Sarah Palin’s hands are a little too dirty. Palin wants to turn the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge into a private oil field for her corporate buddies.
Hunting does not always translate into caring about the environment or its inhabitants. Palin scoffs at global warming even as scientists document the shrinking of the ice caps and drowning of polar bears. Not that Palin cares about polar bears; she actually sued the Bush administration to have them taken off the endangered species list.
Wolves have fared no better under her watch. Until the program was stopped by a state judge, Palin was offering wolf hunters $150 for every hacked-off front foreleg they brought in.
PRO – The selection of a female vice presidential candidate is a historical first for the Republican Party. Finally, the Republicans have entered the 20th century. That’s not a typo. The press seems to have forgotten that Democrats met that milestone last century when Walter Mondale selected Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate in 1984. The Republicans are finally playing catch-up.
CON – In choosing Palin, John McCain passed over a long line of more qualified Republican leaders. If he wanted a female running mate, why not Kay Bailey Hutchison? Hutchison served as state treasurer of Texas before starting her 15 years in the Senate. She is the most senior female Republican senator, with a great deal of experience and responsibility.
Or how about Olympia Snowe? Snowe is the first woman who ever served in both houses, both in the state and nationally, and one of the first to serve on the Senate Armed Services Committee. She was named one of America’s top senators by Time Magazine, and holds a 79% approval rating in her home state of Maine. Snowe is as powerful as she is popular. She chairs the subcommittee that oversees the Navy and Marine Corps and also serves on the Finance Committee. In 35 years, Olympia Snowe has never lost an election.
With choices like Hutchison and Snowe — and Condoleezza Rice, and the list goes on — why did McCain choose a political newbie from the sticks? The answer is clear to hard-working women in all sorts of careers who have watched a younger, less-qualified woman soar past them to assume positions at the top. It’s an old gimmick, really — put a token female near the top to placate the other women in the organization.
Just make sure it’s a woman who will fully support the good ol’ boys, without caring what happens to us other women, or our children, or our world.

What do you expect from someone running for Vice President who thinks it's ok to spoof herself on Saturday Night Live? What about McCain, what's his excuse? |

Toosa:This is unbelievable. What if it had been the 3:00 call on the red phone? It is so bad in fact, that the pranksters have to tell her its a prank. If this woman ends up being our VP, something is terribly wrong in this country. |

Irish -Kudos to you for being bold with your vote. It is sometimes difficult to vote out an incumbent, especially when they have been in the position for 8 years. You show a strong sense of intelligence and guts. Well done! |

Already did peacetou! I voted early and not for Mr. Mullis. The first mailing hooking himself to McCain was offensive enough but the latest ones are a joke. |

Joe,I received one today too. I crumbled it in a ball, threw it in the trash and then decided to pull it back out again. I then picked up the phone and called Mr. Mullis. Of course his voicemail picked up, so I left a message. I swear, he is the epitome of a tacky, worthless, and tasteless politician that has chosen to campaign with rubbish. Please vote this guy out of office. |

I was taught to stand when the Anthem was played and hand over heart when Pledge was done. I never heard of hand over heart during the Anthem. All politicians criticize their opponents, look back at what George H.W. Bush said about Reagan and his economic plan and then he accepted the vice presidency. Seems to me it was voodoo economics or maybe my memory fails me. That was a long time ago. What about Hillary, isn't she campaigning for Obama? Of course she is, she's a Democrat! I agree with Joe the plumber(real one) that McCain is too eager to go to war, he is a Bush disciple and Palin is even more eager. I think she wants to get out her moose gun and take a few shots. I still haven't heard any comments about the First Dude of Alaska belonging to the American Secessionist Party. Is that ok compared to Obama casually knowing Bill Ayers. Should he have done a background check on everyone he associated with? |

I do not think we will be safer under mccain. i admire his service to our country as i admire all service men and women. i was in wwII.i think mccain is too eager to go to war. as the bible says, there is a time for everything and i don't believe mccain knows the difference. i saw him in an interview recently and he mentioned the cuban missle crisis. i believe if he had been in charge we would have bombed cuba. i have followed him for many years. because of his military upbringing he thinks war is the answer to everything. he is a loose cannon and doesn't show the calm, critical judgement needed to keep us safe. |

arc40, I will take your word for the date MADD was formed. I didn't hear of it growing up so I figure it was after my teen years. But arc40, if you go back and read about the accident, and if you believe what is written, and if you believe what the truck drivers family says now, and it has been recent that Biden told this story, then what is one to believe but that he wants your sympathy vote. He is telling a falsehood and the driver of the truck is made out to be the bad guy. Read the story down below that Maggie placed on this blog. There are other sites on the internet if you search out the story. But why, after almost 35 years does he tell this story if not to get the symphathy vote. And on the video of him standing during the National Anthem, his head is bowed down and hands clasped in front of him.VWN, I do believe Obama is a crook. I don't think he is a Muslim. I don't think he is the anti-Christ. I do think he is a trouble maker. I know he has associated with a terrorist, he confirmed that and if you aren't aware of that fact you need to read more and watch a little more news. I think Mrs. Obama has many things in her past she wants to remain there. peacetou, I don't feel I was being critical of you. I'm sorry if you felt I was. Like I have said before, blogging doesn't allow a person to give a tone to a message. Sometimes the written blog is taken in a way the blogger did not mean for it to be taken. So I apologize for you thinking I was being critical of you. I went to the site you suggested that Maggie look into. I thought I blogged what I got out of the site. Like I said, I'm sorry the accident happened. I'm sorry two people lost their lives way to soon. I'm sorry two young boys were injured. I'm also sorry the truck driver had to live with knowing he had killed and injured four people. I'm sorry also, that Biden has chosen just recently to paint the truck driver in a bad way by saying "he drank his lunch". The family is hurt my the accusation. I wonder about someones agenda when they drop little bombshells such as this in a campaign year. But, that's my opinion. And I'm sure everyone has one. |

jaydubya.............Far be it from me to tell anyone what to do, especially those of you who seem to know everything about everything. The point I was making is that you can try to get your point across without going out into left field with your conspiracy theories and innuendos. Whenever I post something, the quote is verified and confirmed, many times over. I'm glad you're not packing it in. You may be misguided, but you're no quitter. I like that. According to you and those with similar mindsets, we're fixing to have a gentleman for President who is a crook, a Muslim, the anti-Christ, a trouble-maker, a radical who associates with terrorists, and who knows what else. And you sir, with your "You're not my father.........." comment, leave yourself too wide open for comment. I enjoy a good battle of wits, but refuse to fight with an unarmed man. Go ahead with your radical, non-confirmed postings. We'll see you at the polls. VWN |

About the hand over the heart thing when the National Anthem was being played, Sen. Obama has explained that he was taught by his grandfather to stand at attention during the anthem, and to place his hand over his heart during the pledge...coming from a military town, I was taught the same thing, in school I might add.As for Sen. Biden and his belief that the truck driver involved in the accident that killed his wife and daughter may have been drinking, I don't believe he is a liar about it. It was 1972, there was not as much public outcry about drunk driving then as there is now. Maybe people at the scene told him they thought the other driver was drinking, who knows, but to call him a liar because that's what he believes and to say he just does it to get Madd votes or sympathy votes is pretty harsh. |

Peacetou, well I learned the hard way to not believe everything posted or that came in my email. I was guilty a few times of passing on emails or posting something I hadn't checked out. Now, I try to go to snopes or other fact sites and make sure I am posting accurately or as accurately as possible.I can understand how you can't get it out of your mind about losing his wife and daughter at Christmas, sadly more than you know. Christmas is the time of year for joy and hope. Pain and suffering just don't seem to fit in. That being said, it is just wrong for him to try and make it something that it wasn't. The driver of the truck wasn't drunk and it appears that she pulled out in front of him. I would imagine that Christmas was hard for that truck driver for the rest of his life as well. I know you didn't ask me, but I will try and tell you why I am going to vote for McCain. I am voting for McCain, because I can't in good concience vote for someone who does not have the same values as I have and because I don't think he will keep America safe. I also don't think that in four years we will be any better off financially, in fact, I think we will be worse off. Truthfully, I don't know if we will be better off financially under McCain, but I do strongly believe we will be safer. Also, if Obama is elected and the democrats take control of both the house and senate with Nancy Pelosi at the top, there will be absolutely no checks and balances and that in my opinion will be disasterous for all of us. |

Sorry, peacetou, but telling a lie at this time is wrong. Of course you can break your heart over it if you want to. I'm sorry it happened. But to lie about it. This is an injustice to the family of the man driving the truck. And peacetou, I have lost a family member due to tragedy. And if you would please remember, it wasn't all that many months ago that Biden was telling us all that Obama wasn't fit to lead. Do you seriously not remember all the things he said? And about Hillary also. I know it's politics, which I hate, but he did say it. Now it seems some want to forget. I vote for the person, not the party. But Obama scares me. Now, after all these months, he hasn't done one thing to change that. Only solidify that thought. He hasn't been on the political scene all that long. He was a community organizer. That reads trouble maker to me. He has a pastor that hates whites and America but he doesn't know anything about it. He get property at half the price but Resko gets the same property for 1 1/2 times more. And he's a crook. Can't dispute that one. He pals with a person wanting to blow America up and has a party at his house but he doesn't know who the guy is. Yeah right. He says, from his mouth he won't wear an American pin in his lapel. Then when he gets the nomination and much heat he starts wearing one. I can't remember right at this moment but he wouldn't put his hand on his heart for the Pledge of Allegiance or the National Anthem. But that too is on film. Just don't remember at this moment which it was. Oh yeah, he's the one I want leading my country. VWN, seems you want to take away the right of those that differ from you to make their thoughts known. I believe you told Slynay to "Please, quit throwing so many barbs. It's becoming very tiring and annoying. Just go and vote like you want to vote and quit throwing crap in the fan." Well sir, the same might be said of you. Please stop curbing our right to have an opinion and our right to voice it. I haven't told you to pack it in and I won't but likewise sir, don't tell me what to do. Only my father told me what to do and you sir are not my father. You vote how you want and so will I. letsmakeachange, that's none of your business. But do you condone lying about the circumstances of Biden's wife and child dying by a drunk driver? Did he think he could get the MADD vote my saying that or just get a sympathy vote? That's not a legacy his wife and daughter deserve. But he said it, twice as a matter of fact. What does that say about him as a person? |

Maggie,You know what I like about you? You always read and then form your own opinions. I like your ability to try and search for the truth. I might not always agree with you but I sure do respect your opinions. I agree that Joe Biden needs to get the story straight, although I really can't get past the fact that he lost his wife, daughter and almost his two sons. I also can't stop thinking about how they were returning with a Christmas tree. I know that might sound crazy, but can you even imagine having this happen at all, but especially at Christmas. I also agree with toosavoter. I think the best thing that can happen is both Palin and Biden step back and be quite. I really enjoy blogging with you :-) |

This discussion about VP's is irrelevent now. It just does not matter any more. Both have said stupid things. Both have hurt the top of the ticket. I think the best thing Palin can do now is to save her own behind and distance herself from McCain and Bush to set herself up for her 2012 run. If Obama does not deliver in the next 4 years, we could have 2 women in the 2012 election, another first. I think the best thing Biden can do now is to SHUT UP until after the election. Obama does not need any more "help" (from either of them). LOL |

Peacetou, I did read the article and it is a heartbreaking tragedy. I can only imagine how he felt to lose his wife and baby daughter and for his sons to be severely injured. My heart goes out to the young husband and father he was at the time, but that does not excuse him many years later trying to blacken the name of the truck driver. How about how the truck driver must have felt for the rest of his life, knowing that a young wife and mother and her baby were killed in the accident? I am sure he had nightmares for the rest of his life, even though he was not at fault.I read several articles and this one was done by Inside Edition, of course, I know there might be some inaccuracies, but I thought it was worth sharing: It was a moment of triumph as Senator Joe Biden was cheered at the Democratic National Convention. The Senator from Delaware comes to the convention with a compelling back-story: a single dad who raised his two young sons after a horrific car accident in 1972 killed his first wife Neilia and 13-month-old daughter Naomi. However, as INSIDE EDITION's Paul Boyd reports, there is a mystery surrounding the details of the tragedy. In a striking moment in December 2007, he opened his heart to University of Iowa students. "Let me tell you a little story. My wife and three kids were Christmas shopping for a Christmas tree, a tractor trailer, a guy who allegedly, and I never pursued it, drank his lunch instead of eating his lunch, broadsided my family, killed my wife instantly, killed my daughter instantly, and hospitalized my two sons." But was the accident really the result of a drunk driver? INSIDE EDITION has learned that some details of the investigation don't seem to fit with what the Senator has said publicly on occasion. In November 1972, Joe Biden was elected to the U.S. Senate at 29 years of age. He and wife Neilia, a schoolteacher, had three children, sons Beau and Hunter, and daughter Naomi. The tragedy unfolded on December 18th in the town of Hockessin, Delaware at about 2:30 in the afternoon. Mrs. Biden was driving her station wagon with her three young children after picking up a family Christmas tree. INSIDE EDITION's Paul Boyd visited Hockessin and the intersection where the accident occurred almost 36 years ago. In 1972, there were no traffic lights and Mrs. Biden pulled away from a stop sign that stood at the corner. According to the State Police investigation, she pulled out into the intersection and didn't see a tractor trailer coming down the highway. The truck crashed into the side of the wagon killing Joe Biden's wife and his 13-month-old daughter. His sons, three and four-years-old, were critically injured. A distraught Biden considered giving up his Senate seat, but was urged to stay on. His emotional swearing-in was conducted at his son Beau's hospital bedside. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials investigated the accident. Was the truck driver drunk? "There was no evidence at the time that was presented to me that the driver of the truck was impaired by alcohol," Jerome Herlihy says. INSIDE EDITION spoke with Herlihy, who was a Deputy Delaware Attorney General at the time of the accident. He was called in to oversee the police investigation. "If there had been any evidence of anything there would have been at least some charges of a violation of a traffic law," Herlihy says. No charges were ever filed. Local newspapers covered the results of the state probe with one 1972 headline declaring, "Trucker Cleared in Biden Crash." Herlihy is also quoted in the 1972 article as saying "…there was absolutely no evidence of drinking." Yet years later, Biden would be quoted at least twice suggesting to crowds that his wife and daughter had been killed by a drunk driver. In the aftermath of September 11th, Biden gave a speech to University of Delaware students to reassure them. INSIDE EDITION found that speech archived on Biden's own website in which he told the crowd, "I got one of those phone calls...I got a phone call saying, 'Your wife's dead; your daughter's dead' ... It was an errant driver who stopped to drink instead of drive and hit a tractor trailer, hit my children and my wife and killed them." Then again, in December 2007, Biden addressed students at the University of Iowa while campaigning for the Democratic Presidential nomination. "Let me tell you a little story. My wife and three kids were Christmas shopping for a Christmas tree, a tractor trailer, a guy who allegedly, and I never pursued it, drank his lunch instead of eating his lunch, broadsided my family, killed my wife instantly, killed my daughter instantly, and hospitalized my two sons." The truck driver, Curtis Dunn, died in 1999 at age of 74. According to his family he never recovered from the emotional trauma of knowing he was involved in the accident that killed a senator's wife and child. The daughter of the truck driver invited INSIDE EDITION to her home for an interview to defend her father's reputation and emphasize that the accident was not his fault. But in the small, tight knit state of Delaware where Senator Joe Biden is enormously popular, the daughter was distraught and decided she wasn't comfortable appearing on camera to talk about how deeply hurt she's been that her father has been falsely portrayed as a drunk driver who killed the Senator's first wife and daughter. As the country now knows, Joe Biden went on to find happiness with his second wife Jill, who he married five years after the accident. The couple have a daughter, Ashley. Biden's sons from his first marriage have both gone on to have successful careers. Beau Biden is Delaware's Attorney General, and Hunter Biden is an influential Washington lobbyist. Whatever happened on December 18th, 1972 the terrible events of that day have created an indelible mark on the life of Joe Biden, the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee. In a statement to INSIDE EDITION today, Biden's spokesman says: "Senator Biden understands the intense interest in him as the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee and has mentioned the accident over the years. His focus has always been on the tragedy of losing his wife and daughter, not on the circumstances that led to the crash. Dredging up the details of the accident now serves no purpose." Biden's spokesman added that the accident was "painful for everyone involved," including the family of the truck driver. For the record, I do know what it is like to have a tragic death in a family. |

Maggie: "Did any of you watch the interview of Joe Biden? He did get angry and didn't like having some tough, honest questions. Did you know that the Obama campaign will not give anymore interviews to that station? What are they afraid of?"The problem with asking that question is that the same can be asked of the McCain camp when they thought the questions about Palin were too tough. She comes out of nowhere, then no one is supposed to ask her anything, question her intelligence, or look into her experience? And everytime anyone has dared to do so, it is labeled as an anti-feminst attack. This is all just really silly. These people know that they are going to be put under a microscope when they sign up for the job. Gender or race should not have anything to do with it. I will say, you are just about the only person I've seen compare Palin to Biden rather than to Obama. If McCain WERE to win, I wonder how it would feel to know that he probably only got in because of the sensationalism of his running mate? |

All of you are the pot calling the kettle black. Everyone on here who are Obama/Biden supporters have bashed and trashed McCain and Palin, but when someone dishes it back out, you say the Republicans are the cry babies and desperate. Most everyone on here just puts back out what the media feeds them, who knows what is really the truth on either side. What is most important to me is strong, national security. Without it, it won't matter what the economy does and quite frankly, I don't think Obama can keep America secure. |

Why is it everyone on here can put Sarah Palin down and call her names, when she too is a Christian, yet someone says some things about Joe Biden and you all jump down his throat? Also, what has losing a wife and child got to do with lying for years about the accident and ruining someones life in the process? Did any of you watch the interview of Joe Biden? He did get angry and didn't like having some tough, honest questions. Did you know that the Obama campaign will not give anymore interviews to that station? What are they afraid of? |

jaydubya.......You're talking like the typical republican in this state of the game; scared and desperate. You can say what you want about Obama. At this point in the political process he represents change. You don't like his ideas? Don't vote for him. On the other hand, a vote for McCain is a vote for Palin. Frankly, that scares me to death. I cannot imagine her in charge of a state, much less an entire country. "The issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should. I've got Greenspan's book." --John McCain, in an interview with the Boston Globe. "You know that old Beach Boys song, Bomb Iran? Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran." --John McCain, breaking into song after being asked about whether it was time to send a message to Iran. "We have a lot of work to do. It's a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq-Pakistan border." --referring to a border that does not exist, ABC News interview, July 21, 2008. "I was concerned about a couple of steps that the Russian government took in the last several days. One was reducing the energy supplies to Czechoslovakia." --referring to a country that no longer exists, Phoenix, Arizona, July 14, 2008. "I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. I don't expect to be a great communicator, I don't expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need." --New York Times interview, July 13, 2008. "Well, basically, it's a Google." --on how he's conducting his VP search, Richmond, Virginia, June 9, 2008. "We should be able to deliver bottled hot water to dehydrated babies." --Kenner, Louisiana, June 3, 2008. "I believe in evolution. But I also believe, when I hike the Grand Canyon and see it at sunset, that the hand of God is there also." " The point is it’s American casualties. We’ve go to get American’s off the frontline, have the Iraqis as part of the strategy, take over more and more of the responsibilities, and then I don’t think Americans are concerned if we’re there for a hundred years or a thousand years or ten thousand years." John McCain Face the Nation, January 6, 2008. "Americans have got to understand that we are paying present-day retirees with the taxes paid by young workers in America today. And that's a disgrace. It's an absolute disgrace and it's got to be fixed." --on Social Security, Denver, Colorado, July 7, 2008. “They need the education and training.” ~ John McCain on why he opposed equal pay legislation designed to ensure women who already have equal education, training, and qualifications be paid comparable salaries as men in the same job positions. This man is scary. Is this the best the republican party has to offer? Are you satisfied with what we've had for the last 8 years? If you are, and don't want change, by all means vote for McCain. If you want change, vote Obama. That's your right and nobody can take that away from you. Saying things about Biden and Obama is just proving how desperate the republican party really is. Use your vote like you want to, but stick to the basics. VWN |

jaydubya:Just when I thought the Republicans had gone as low as they could go, you prove me wrong. I would like for you to read the information in this link: http://blog.christianitytoday.com/ctpolitics/2008/10/the_death_of_jo.html It is from a Christian magazine. If you can read this account and still say ugly things about Joe Biden, I pity you. Also, if you listen to Senator Biden's entire speech, the comment regarding "Obama being tested" is taken out of context. He states that all Presidents are tested and we will see that Obama has a backbone made of steel. There are too many negative things to say about Sarah Palin, but I won't go there. |

Joe Biden should learn to keep his mouth shut. First he leads everyone think his first wife and kids died due to a drunk driver. Not true. Then he says Obama will be tested in the first six months of his presidency. Then he can't get through an interview with out losing his temper. Yeah, that's who I want one heart beat from the presidency. Sarah has handled all her interviews with class. Even when a CNN reporter misquoted she had been called "stupid" and a few other similar names, all she did was to say "well I need to talk to that reporter". Turns out the CNN reported misquoted the report but wow, he refused to apoligize for his blunder. Yeah, Sarah is so bad. She doesn't have to do anything and she is wrong. Ya'll are so blind. |

You can tell McCain is on the verge of senility. One word. Palin. You can train a dog to bark. You can even train a dog to shut up. If Palin just arrived at gatherings and kept her mouth shut, nobody would be the wiser. Then she makes the mistake of opening her mouth and everything goes down the tubes. I always thought McCain was a few fries short of a Happy Meal, but his choice of Palin confirmed it.VWN |

I have also heard that Sarah Palin is a diva and refuses to co-operate with McCain's people. She seriously thinks she is setting herself up for a run in 2012. Hillary would eat her for breakfast! |

toosavoter:This is my favorite part of the piece from Anchorage Daily News: “. . . Sen. John McCain, is the wrong choice for president at this critical time for our nation. Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, brings far more promise to the office. In a time of grave economic crisis, he displays thoughtful analysis, enlists wise counsel and operates with a cool, steady hand. The same cannot be said of Sen. McCain. Since his early acknowledgement that economic policy is not his strong suit, Sen. McCain has stumbled and fumbled badly in dealing with the accelerating crisis as it emerged. He declared that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong" at 9 a.m. one day and by 11 a.m. was describing an economy in crisis. He is both a longtime advocate of less market regulation and a supporter of the huge taxpayer-funded Wall Street bailout. His behavior in this crisis -- erratic is a kind description -- shows him to be ill-equipped to lead the essential effort of reining in a runaway financial system and setting an anxious nation on course to economic recovery." |

"I wonder how many Alaskan governors know what the "senate" is?"Lol, toosa. An even better question. Thanks. I haven't really been "gone." I lurk around every now and then, just haven't had alot of time to post. I get a big enough kick out of reading alot of the messages on here, so I haven't really felt the need to say much. Some of this stuff is just downright amusing....either that, or very sad. :-/ -Depends on my mood. |

The Vice-President is President of the Senate but has no vote unless there is a tie. Since the 1870's no Vice-President has cast as many as 10 tie-breaking votes. Now how many votes do think are taken during a years time. The VP obviously does not run or control the Senate.During the 20th century, the VP position has evolved into more of av Executive Branch position. The VP presides over the Senate only on ceremonial occasions or when a tie-breaking vote may be needed. Sorry maggie but that's all it is, as far as the Senate is concerned. AC |

Sarah Palin was speaking to a reporter when she made the statement. Here are her actually words:Speaking to a reporter Tuesday who asked her about a third-grader's question about the role of the United States vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, Republican nominee Sen. John McCain's running mate, offered this explanation: "... A vice president has a really great job because, not only are they there to support the president's agenda, they're like the team member, the teammate to that president, but also, they're in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the Senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom." |

AC, is the President of the United States not in charge of the country?? Well then, I would think that if the vice-president is President of the Senate, that would mean in charge of or presiding over, would it not? Again, she was speaking to an 8 year old, so she was explaining it in terms he/she would understand. I know toosavoter didn't say it, but he took such glee in reporting it. |
