Mike, I am Jill Alford's older sister, so I grew up in Rome also. With four of the nine siblings living in other states quite far away from Georgia, I was so thankful everyone was there for Jill and our precious niece and nephews. We are still numb over what happened to Kirk. I can't imagine how Jill, Nathan, Sarah, and Marcus feel. But to see the overwhelming outpouring of love shown by the community the evening of the visitation - over 5 hours of familiar and unfamiliar faces - we, as a family, are grateful for the tribute paid to him through your cartoon. The morning of the funeral, I sat at my mom's as we read the paper. When she turned the page, saw your cartoon, and showed it to me, after she said, "Oh, my!", we sat there speechless and teary eyed. My mom then said, "That's just awesome." Thank you, Mike. Thank you so much. I told my sister later that I really wish I'd verbally told Kirk how glad I was that he'd married my sister. They were truly best of friends, and we know that nothing was more important to him than his relationship with The Lord, as well as his wife and children. I envy those of you who knew him even better than I. But I do know he was quite a remarkable man. We really appreciate what you did for our family. - Holly Eccles, Sapulpa, OK |

Dear Jill Alford,I was my honor to know Kirk. He was a man who made a difference in a world where they are in short supply. You and your family are in our prayers, Mike Lester |

Mike: I am an armchair observer regarding your cartoons. You are a brilliant cartoonist. Very ,very, creative, unique and unusal to say the least. However you often go overboard on some issues. You did an excellent job on Kirk and one that the family and friends can be proud. I must admit, as a long time personal friend of Jerry Falwell,( knew him when he came to speak at our college on numerous occasions as I was always on the welcome committee)...... and he always kept us laughing. He did not flaunt his notoriety and I NEVER heard him say one unkind word or belittle anyone. I must admit he was opinionated but he never did out of hate or malice. I wish you could have depicted him in that light rather than the other side. Moreover, I must admit, you did not know the man and you just assumed that your reindition was cute and catchy! I , for one, think you should have been ashamed........... but............. that's my observation , comment and opinion as always. |

Mike,Only you could, and would honor a friend like Kirk Alford with a tribute like yesterday's cartoon !! You are really an amazing and talented guy. Still a little liberal, but on the road to conservatism. Great job. |

Hello to all, Mike Lester has reached the Bahamas. His work is highly appreciated here by myself and many other Americans working and living in the Bahamas. It's refreshing to see humor with someone that has a realistic view on U.S. affairs. We are very tired of hearing only negative talk about the USA. Living outside the country makes my couuntry even more precious. I hope Rome, Georgia appreciates what they have in Mike Lester. Thank you for the opportunity to express my thoughts. |

I love Mike Lester and his cartoons which are too often more straightforward than most news stories I read.Just because you do not agree with someone does not make them a bigot-Jackie8. In fact, because you call someone else one, it often makes you look like one! BTW, have an OPEN MIND about his cartoons! LOL A shout out to Mr. Melton ! |

Jackie8, I was not chastizing you, I was just stating how I look at things. Again, welcome to the board.MSLA, I've never been called a hero before, most of what I talk about is just common sense, not "book learning", although I too went back to college in my later years to get my degree. I like that you don't take everything at face value, I always research anything I write about politics and I don't write much at all about religion because I consider that a private concern. Happy New Year to you and the grandgirls. I had my 13 and 16 yr old grandgirls up for Christmas break. I've been dealing with the little ones so long now, it was a real eye opener to have the teenage thinking in the house. |

Twinkie is one of my heroes! ha ha ha ha!!! Seriously, Mike can be sooo funny and sooo insulting. So I take what I like with what I don't. Overall, I'm thankful that we have a talent like his at our paper! Thanks, Mike. |

I apologize for using such language to describe my feelings and I also apologize to Mike. It just makes me sad that its 2007 and some people still can't have an open mind. But you are correct Twinkie, it's his opinion and his right. |

I don't always agree with Mike Lesters political views in his cartoons but I will defend his right to have them and I do like his artwork. |

I think Mike Lester is a biggot, sexist person, who has no respect for women or homosexual people for that matter. I cringe every day that your cartoon comes out in fear that you have provided another ridiculous misinterpretation of women, homosexuals, democrats, or any other person in the community that may have an "open" perspective on life. What century are you living in Mike? |

MM, you are too funny!!! Did you hear about the new Bush draft for senior citizens? I actually got a cartoon on it today so I thought maybe you did too. Anyway, the 'oldsters' will only serve part-time after naptime. And, they are each outfitted in their very own wheelchair with automatic weapons at the ready to blow up the enemy! |

wwjohnson1, all last week we were in mourning for President Ford. And one of the specials being broadcast was a series of tapes released that were held until after his death. Ford spoke candidly about subjects and his opinions were publically released in them. Some of his statements made the news so I'm surprised that you didn't read or hear about any of them. I'll try to jog your memory: do you remember the news stories about Ford also having a personal, friendship reason to pardon Nixon? The reason this hit the news is that Ford had always denied that friendship played any role at all in the pardon. But these tapes were held on purpose so he could tell the ultimate truth and be candid. As recently as the interview he did when he turned 90, he still denied that friendship played a role in that pardon. Now he dies and the truth can be released: friendship did play a part in the pardon, he said. And he also said the entering into a war with Iraq was a mistake. He also said a lot of other things that reveal his inner self. He said that if he was judged solely on his decision to put Stevens on the Supreme Court, that would be okay with him. (Not exact words.) He was surprising to me about some things. (That's why this editorial works.) Now these are video tapes. And he comes from the era when sitting presidents weren't critized by retired presidents - much less from their own party. For him to speak out against Bush would be completely against his personality. Please do just a little research on-line. These all just surfaced and were just run and in the news. I'm sure you'll easily find them and be able to review them for yourself. |
