jrkenn, you might also try the following:
1. Send a regular letter (with a postage stamp)
2. Contact your district's county commissioner
3. Go to a board of commissioners meeting
4. Talk to your neighbor
5. Keep the trash cleaned up around your house

Sometimes a person to person meeting is the only way to achive a desired result.
I have met with Mr. Meadows in the past and he was a reasonable man, although it did take 45 minutes before I was called to meet in his office.

Another email I sent to Zoning and Catoosa BOC, No one ever responded to the first one I sent...

I emailed you and the Board of Commissioners last Tuesday the 18th and have not got any response that you read or received my email. After reading the citation again I realized that my brush pile is also on the citation. I cant burn during the week because it gets dark to early by the time I get home from work to start a brush fire. As you can see in the attachment The STATE OF GEORGIA is NOT issuing burn permits today witch is Saturday the 22nd. I am mainly sending this to show that I am willing to burn the brush pile but I don't think that I will be able to do so this weekend because no permits are being issued. I think the least someone could do is at least email me back and acknowledge that you have got my emails and have read them.

This whole situation is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous and I don't want to waste my time arguing on the phone about something that should not even be an issue. This is has been going on for 3 years and you would think that after 3 years you would see a pattern and realize that these complaints from my neighbor are nothing but someone trying to use your office to harass his neighbor. I think its time for this to STOP. I am getting tired of it and I am getting tired of my family being harassed. I realize that you are doing your job but as I stated before, something needs to be done about writing citations for every little thing someone calls in about.

Thanks for listening.

When you put it that way it does make sense Toosa and you're right, it could have been handled better and maybe there wouldn't have been so many hard feelings.

imagine, I respect people who volunteer to fight fires in our community. It's a very noble thing to do, much like serving in the military. However, we are not passing buckets of water to save a barn anymore. It's 2008 and this county has grown. If we want to continue to grow and bring in more tax revenue by bringing in manufacturing businesses, we are going to have to invest in our fire protection service. That means full-time, professional firefighters, who must pass drug tests, and who have top-notch training for both firefighting techniques and ethics. I agree that the transition could have been handled better, but it is what it is. I think the chances of going back to the volunteer fire service are slim to none. Let's move on and make the most of this opportunity.

Well, locked's last sentence says it all. Who can blame the other volunteers for being upset if the Post volunteers are going to be the leaders and they are treated as second class. Chuck Gass has done a good job, remember the huge wreck on the intersate a few years ago. It was all over the news what an outstanding job he did coordinating the rescues. I don't know Mr. Gass, I have no family member involved but I do have some friends who were volunteers and who I feel have been treated badly. They did a good job as volunteer firemen.

I also hope the volunteers will realize their services have been appreciated. While their loyalty to Gass is respectful to his past service, Gass needed to go for many public and private reasons. Things have changed from the time it was just a good old boys club.

The interview issue must be a ruse. The volunteers shouldn't complain about sitting down and talking about what is expected in the new organization. The wouldn't take an hour to talk, yet some of them loudly complain that they don't know what is expected.

We could imagine that only 2-3 (maybe as many as 4) probably wouldn't be offered positions in the new Department. Obviously the most vocal and radical statements made be those few show they just wouldn't fit into the new organization.

Will the new County Department, now without Gass and some radicals, be more acceptable to the Post volunteers? Hope now the experienced Post volunteers can be the leaders in the new County Department of volunteers if they will all consolidate.

Has there been any progress with the firemen?
Are cooler heads prevailing? Who is leading the charge
to get the volunteers to come back to the table?

I live in Catoosa Co. I have read all I can find, I've watched the news, I don't understand the problem.
I was with Chickamauga FD when Walker took over. We thought it was great. The whole fire dept. became much better equiped, organized, and managed. AND we started getting a paycheck of sorts.
Is the interview really an issue? Seems like an opportunity to ask a few questions about the new organization to me. If you guy's will band together and embrace the change (thats coming like it or not) we will all win.

Shadylady, what is wrong with interviewing? Some of my favorite interviews were when I was applying for a job within my own company. I knew the manager, and he knew me and my qualifications. We ended up spending a few minutes talking about those qualifications, and the rest of the time just shooting the breeze. These volunteers should use these interviews as an opportunity to gripe (if they want to) and talk about the future of the department. It is not a tool to "weed them out". These guys are probably the most qualified and experienced applicants for these jobs. What's wrong getting paid for doing something you love doing?

I think we need to look at this decision from the point of view of potential businesses who would want to set up shop in this county. These companies and their insurance companies want fire protection they can count on, which means full time coverage. We (the county citizens) need to ask ourselves if we want to remain a small quiet rural county, or do we want to attract some of the side businesses from the VW plant. If you like high property taxes, then we can stay small and pay for inflationary services from a smaller tax base. If we really want to grow the tax base, we need to invest in our infrastructure, which includes our fire protection services.

toosavoter,
I disagree with you. These men, some of them for over forty five years, have worked for you for nothing. Anything that chief Gass made he spent it on the firemen. The new Chief is drawing a salary that I heard was about $65,000 a year. Also the paid fireman will also be paid from your tax dollars In todays economy being the way it is, can the county afford it without raising our taxes. These men had no problem with turning in an application or taking a drug test. When the county ask that each one of them be interviewed, like the county didn't already know them and their work habits, that was the final straw. I thank them for their service and pray that the commission will think again

What are these volunteer firefighters afraid of? They should be proud to call themselves "professionals". I admire the volunteer spirit, but it's time to move on.
Times change, and it's time for us to have a full-time, professional fire department,
instead of a bunch of cry babies. Can these guys not read, so they can't fill out a
job application? Are they on drugs, so they will fail a drug test? They need to start
acting like men, instead of whining children!

Catoosa County Zoning,

I cant believe that the tax payers money is wasted on something like this. This is an absolute out rage that 4 or 5 bags of cans that are "UNDER MY PORCH" constitutes a violation. If I had these in the middle of my yard I might expect a citation. This is nothing but a neighbor that has harassed me for the last 3 years because he didn't get the bid on the house I bought. He has tried every little thing he can to try and harass me and my family at the counties expense and the county is enabling the harassment by writing these things up, giving my neighbor more leverage to further harass my family. This needs to be addressed. I don't have the time to go to meetings and don't have the time to waste on such nonsense, but it is the job of the Commissioners to look out for the welfare of its constituents. This is not being done in my case. You need to look at these pictures (pictures are not in this blog) and ask yourself is this a violation, or just someone trying save a few cans and maybe have a little spending money when they are cashed in?? The only way to stop these type people who think they OWN everyone is to stop enabling them and giving in to useless complaints. This Commission and county employees need to take a look at why they got into office and why they went to work for the county in the first place and ask there self did I do a good job today?

I am not necessarily griping at one particular person or the person that wrote the warning as they are doing what they are told. What I am griping at is the way the county handles these type complaints. It is such a waste of time and talent to give in to useless complaints that are nothing more than fuel for a "harassing" agenda. I cant say for sure which neighbor did complain but I am 99% sure who it is. I think its time for the Zoning Board and Commission to take a look at some these frivolous ordinances and start working for "Community" again. Lets get rid of this writing out citations for every little complaint that comes across the phone. I think if a person makes a complaint then they should have to give there name and the Zoning Officer should talk to both owners of a dwelling before issuing a warning or citation. Start working with the "people" and help them work out problems. Lets do away with the enabling and make this a better community for our Kids and grand kids.

By the way, I did take my cans to the recycle center. I was planning on waiting a little longer so I would get more money for them. I got a little over $4 (Four Dollars). That's how many cans I had.

Maggie, you must not live in Catoosa county. This has been ongoing for months, the volunteer firefighters have been treated so badly......I never have been able to figure out why Chairman Clark was intent on dissolving them. They saved my home a few years ago from a fire that burned through the woods from a trash fire that got away from a neighbor at least a half mile from me. I appreciate them. It may have been that this was the day they were ordered to surrender their equipment and leave. I know there was a date they were supposed to do that, not sure when.

Geez! Now what? It seems that we lost our fire fighters in Catoosa County tonight. The volunteers decided to play hardball and walked off. I wonder if we have enough left to save our homes from burning down?

Rome News Tribune.Today Sunday 11-02-08. if you read the full story it will be the 2nd to last paragraph. And I would never go as low to curse, and or name call. And trust me being someone who cares about her appearance I would NEVER try to physically harm anyone----unless they break into my house of course-- then I would practice my right to bear arms, and use it.

This is a free country. We have a 1st Amendment right to peaceably assemble and protest against whatever we choose, as long as we do not break the laws (violence, vulgarities, destruction of property, etc). Although I disagree with your candidate, I support your right to protest. Which front page is carrying this story that you refer to?

I have also had my McCain sign stolen, but I just bought another as to contribute to the campaign. Just wanted to comment that I was the protester at the Barack Hussein Obama deal yesterday in front of city hall. I first off did not yell, merely just cheered when everyone thought Obama was the man for the job I cheered that it was McCain. I also said that he (B. Hussein Obama) was a socialist and that I did not want find it fair to be punished with higher taxes just to "spread the wealth".
Thanks just wanted to clear a few things up with front page story.

What makes me mad in Catoosa County is the people stealing our Obama signs.

Not to worry. You will be seeing MANY soon and for those who are thinking about stealing them, we will have the ability to take your picture and snap a photo of your car tag. We have had discussions with the sheriff's office. We WILL turn you in . . .

I have been out of town, just got home to find the final (I hope) mailing from Jeff Mullis. Two things made me laugh out loud!

1. The picture of his hand over the Bible on the front. He is a fine upstanding Christian and then in the next breath begins viciously attacking Mr. Coker. Nice Christian example there, Mr. Mullis.

2. On the inside when it says, "Bruce Coker and the liberals in Atlanta that support him can't get over this simple fact - Jeff Mullis is incredibly effective at delivering for us." HaHaHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Only a marketing company could come up with that tagline because it is absolutely untrue! Um, wondered if the beer money, cigarette money, pharmaceutical money or PAC monies paid for this mail out. I’ll just bet the members of First Baptist Church of Chickamauga would not be pleased with his donors . . .

Emerald: You may be happy with Mr. Mullis but his constitutes have done the math and we have gotten the shaft. He double-dipped with our tax money and still didn't deliver. Hope he can go back to selling shoes. He has a big head and a short memory. We put him in there, and we’re taking him out.

He is despicable.

Of course you will now say that you voted in the run off. You didn't state that before you were confronted about your statement. You need to call Keith Greene and talk to him about the rifle range if you have concerns since he will be the next Chairman of the Commission. If you truly have concerns about it you will call him to discuss it. Expressing your concerns on this blog will not change anything.

Senator Jeff Mullis is not going any where. Beside the fact that the 53rd district is a Republican district, how could you possibly expect someone like Bruce Coker to defeat anyone, especially Senator Mullis. Bruce Coker a poor candidate to put up against anyone.

I watched the debate between Greene and Long and was disappointed to hear Mr.Greene(retired military) say he was for trying to get the land at the rifle range for devolpment of industry. Our county has an Industrial Park on 151 that isn't be fully utilized. I voted for him against Clark but Lynn Long will get my vote this round and I pray any National Guard units or civic organizations that use this facility will do the same.

Mr. Mullis has had EIGHT YEARS to produce. I think that is more than enough time to prove his worth. In addition, why is he not seeking companies for our area through his senate job? Why are we paying him an additional $75K?

I say we have given him a chance and he has failed. Time to get someone else in the job.

I have heard "If it ain't broke don't fix it" so many times that I gave it some thought.

That may work fine for a car or a washing machine, or a power tool (But I think not there either..see below).....but for something as dynamic as political representation, I tend to disagree totally. If the political leaders are just not getting the job done, are not controlling expenses, while at the same time are not improving services, we need to eliminate them.

I am not a fan of higher taxes, but if they are raised with a sound justification, I will support that. We are living in a world that changes regularly. costs go up faster than incomes do. OK, and Technology changes more than once annually. Electronics and phones change constantly. Mortgage rates change 2-3 times daily.

If we bought into the "Wait until it breaks to fix it" argument, we'd never change oil in our cars, replace worn tires, or oil chainsaw blades. The would be no preventive maintenance on anything. And when it broke, we'd pay more, and lose more working time than if we gave it regular care.

I say now is the time to give our local leadership some attention, supporting those political leaders who have helped move us forward, and removing those who have not. And I mean we need to retain those with a long term vision as they should stay in long enough to get the job done... and those with NO vision or who have a very shortsighted one should be removed, or never elected in the first place.

I am amazed at the rhetoric against Senator Mullis, and in support of mr. Coker. I have been to events where they have spoken. I read a lot. This saying that one or the other is not 'Christian' has little bearing for me. that is mudslinging in the bible-belt, pure an dsimple.

Is it just me, or does Mr. Coker have a single drumbeat... It gioes "Hire me to stop the drug dealers and keep you safe in your homes." He has no comprehension of long term planning, just reactive management. His theme is to increase the number of police and sheriffs deputys, as if that will resolve his issue. yes, it would give him job security... but is that the answer to our problems?

Preventive education, harsher laws, and more stringent punishments also work to deter criminals, and at a cheaper cost than adding more personnel. mr. Mullis has been challenged on not delivering economic development. I think securing Roper Corp. down in LaFayette should get him so kudus. Thats about 1500 jobs that could have been lost.

Retaining companies, and recruiting for the long term is what he does. Development takes a long time, and lots of groundwork needs to be layed. I somehow think many readers are unaware that it takes 1-2 years from first contact with a potential business before the public is even aware that anything has been going on. Also, if any information leak occurs before the deal is struck, the client leaves without a backward glance. We will never be able to know the actual amount of work that has been done to secure businesses in our area, and in truth, in that business there is no credit for effort, only for the results. And yet Sen. Mullis works diligently, both in Atlanta and here, and even abroad, in his two roles, for our betterment. We don't see the background work. And for anyone who thinks going overseas on business is a 'vacation', as Mr. Coker believes, they have never had to do it. there isn't time to sightsee, as office buildings and businesses are the same all over. crowded, smokey, and tension-filled.

If Jeff Mullis is to live or die by the 'results' of economic development efforts, I suggest we should at least give him the time and support he needs to do this complex and painstakingly slow work in order for us to reap the rewards of his efforts.

If Mr. Coker was elected, he would need to learn all about how slow government works, and Mr. Mullis would still be head of the area economic development effort, perhaps waiting for Mr. Coker to 'learn' his new role. Mr. Coker needs to understand that getting a company to stay, to grow, or to relocate here in NW GA. is not like making a sudden raid on a crack house and sending the bad guys to jail. That takes planning, true, but the results and media coverage are immediate, and the recognition and accolades are right away. BUT, in development efforts, media coverage and the collateral credit due comes a LOONNNGG time after initial plans are laid, and initial contacts are made. I support Mullis because he understands that Rome (NOT in GA.) and our part of NW Georgia was not and will not be built in a day.... or a week ...or a month...or a year......

Well, the questions continue.

Seems Tom Weldon has had two events; one was a coffee reception at his parents house a couple of weeks ago and the 2nd one was a free chili get together in Ringgold last night.

It seems that Mr. Weldon wants the voters to come to HIM instead of him going to the VOTERS. I wonder if he will expect our Capitol to move all his sessions to Ringgold?

I swear, the man CANNOT truly want this position.

After yesterday's sermon discussing how we should pray for our enemies, I guess I should try and pray for the Tennessee guys.

I know that is the right thing to do, but it is SO hard for me to do . .

Mr. Weldon needs to understand that EVERY VOTE needs to be earned, and not taken for granted because he belongs to a certain political party. It is quite obvious that Ralph Noble is the more eloquent speaker and the better candidate with REAL goals for our district, regardless of his party affiliation.

As I wrote last night during the Battlefield Pilot's Club Candidates Forum, I was suprised to not see Mr. Weldon participating. Mr. Noble was there and did his usual good job of talking about the issues. Then I remembered Mr. Weldon did not show up at the Pilot's Club Forum prior to the primary. Oh, and he did not bother to submit a biography to the Catoosa paper prior to the primary.

I did some checking and also found out that he had never voted in a Republican Primary in Catoosa County until this one, when his name was on the ballot. Your voting history is public record, not who you voted for, just if you voted. In fact he did not vote in the Republican Presidential Primary. Amazingly, he did not vote at all in 2006, when Sonny Perdue was elected Governor, and Casey Cagle was elected Lt. Governor. Guess that might have taken too much time.

I wonder how much time he will have for us?

Familymom,
If you are thinking about the Tax Commissioner being a Democrat, you are absolutley correct. However, she does not set the millage rates. She only collects the taxes. Your commissioners do the setting, as do your school board members.

Age should not matter if that person knows what is going on. Melvin Edwards has experience in all areas of education. He was a techer, a principal, and now a school board member. I like people with experience. A new person may come in with some radical ideas that would ruin our wonderful school system. My thought pattern is if it isn't broke don't fix it. Experience means a lot to me and many other people

Tom Weldon has been missing in action for a long time..He will not appear on UCTV because he does not know the answers to the questions that Judy or her listening audience asks. HE wants to go to Atlanta to adjudecate for us. I want someone who will work for us. He has not knocked on the first door. He did attend one debate and his answers were terrible. He has had to lend his campaign a large sum of money. Please vote for Ralph Noble. He is well educated and knows his way around the capital. We have been without representation since Ken Poston was in Atlanta. Please cross party lines and vote for the best person for the job.

JW-
For once, we agree.
Ditto with regards to McCain and Bush. We need fresh ideas.

Edwards is to old and been around too long. Why isn't the system better than it is. I say new faces, new thoughts, new ideas.
