Ringgold ponders city's visual appeal

Ringgold City Council members discussed the city’s visual appeal June 11, from trends in building materials to new Christmas decorations.
Debating the look of split-face block and stucco, council members discussed what types of materials might be appropriate for use in its historic district.
“The block has depth to it but not like a flat surface,” said Mayor Joe Barger. “There are times when you can no longer get materials that look historical.”
Councilman O.C. Adcock said he would be more open to split-face block rather than stucco.
“I could go along with that a lot better than putting on mud,” he said.
Councilman Tom Clark said the future of the building materials will depend on just how historical looking the council wishes to keep the area.
“That’s not a historical block,” he said.
Ringgold Planning and Zoning Chairman Terry Crawford said its commission will be reviewing its ordinance for building materials at the request of the council in its July meeting.
“With the blasting and settling in our area the stucco is a lot easier to crack,” he said.
Council members approved the purchase of Christmas lights and decorations for $4,455 from Holiday Designs including wreaths, garlands and bows for the Citizen’s Park, City Hall and Ringgold Depot.
The council also reviewed initial design work to improve its website by Ringgold Telephone Co. Council members asked the company to begin improving its website to a more tourist friendly and appealing site some weeks ago. Design improvements are ongoing, according to City Manager Dan Wright.
In other business Monday, June 11, at Ringgold City Hall, Ringgold City Council voted unanimously to:
* Advise Ringgold Telephone Co. it will need to contact the City of Chattanooga relating to its request to place a cable in a section of the Ringgold sewerage interceptor easement.
* Accept Biscuit Way, Kristen Drive and Cassidy Lane in the Remco Business Center as city streets.
* Renew the annual city contract for inmate labor crew.
* Approve $5,000 purchase of handheld meter reading equipment and training from Southern Meter Co.
* Approve 5 percent annual pay increase for city employees.
* Approve a conditional use for an ice vending machine on U.S. 41 in front of Gun Trader.
* Approve the annexation and rezoning of land next to Food Lion on Poplar Springs Road to C-2 for the purpose of building an Ace Hardware and other retail businesses.

I agree pave the roads, do something about the traffic and how about just keeping the grass mowed and trash picked up. Get those prisoners out doing something useful. I have driven into Ringgold on 41 highway and there on the side of the road at Ingles is tons of trash with the sign that says welcome to Ringgold, gateway to the south. How appealing is that?????? Also, they need to keep the grass at the exits on I-75 and 151 mowed and picked up. Something else that would be nice is lights on the bridge so it would look nice at night. |

Ponder on fixing the road systems and traffic situation. We pay more and more taxes but it takes me way to long to get out of Ringgold to go to work... 151 is a nightmare.... |

Many years ago, when I was assistant manager at a business near Ingles, the manager of Ingles came into our store with handfuls of the trash and complaining about trash in "his" parking lot that was coming from our customers throwing shopping bags and other trash down after making purchases.
He told us he was going to start charging our store for our trash pickup from "his" parking lot.
Then on days when the wind was blowing from Ingles side of the parking lot toward our store, the Ingles shopping bags and sales flyers from their store was several times the amount of garbage strewn about the parking lot that we had to go clean up outside our store.
Since Ingles and Family Dollar are the only retail stores in that building now, guess who's garbage ends up at the City of Ringgold's Welcome sign?
They don't pay grocery baggers and buggy fetchers to go down the hill and pick up trash in the grass before Hyw. 41 at the City's Welcome sign do they?
People just don't have any responsibility for their garbage when it comes to throwing out trash after making purchases. As long as it isn't in their vehicle, who cares? They sure don't. To lazy to hit a garbage can.
Just look at the exits of the convenience stores in our area, non-winning lottery tickets, food wrappers and other product wrappers are strewn everywhere.
Wonder when the last time a citation was written for being a litterbug in those areas?
Then we have the fast food and beer drinking bandits who seem to finish their meal or in the case of beer, "liquid lunches" after a few miles from the Ringgold convenience stores and "toss" the empty wrappers and containers out the window of their vehicle. I bet they have the cleanest interiors in their vehicles because no trash stays in there, it all goes out the window.
They would never have to pay for garbage pick up, just fling it all out the window when no one is looking.
To these people, a garbage can and a vehicle's window are the same thing. I hope they don't open a garbage can to get some fresh air into their vehicle.
Trashy people, sheeesh,
Just take a look at some of the homes in our area. Trash bags and loose trash just dropped out the door into or off the porch and the wind, stray dogs and cats finish the trash slinging job for them.
After 12 bags sitting there for more than a month, it should be a health hazard deserving a fine.
All these trashy people are the ones who need citations, and then to pay the fine, put out there on the roadside wearing a "I am a Litterbug" sign as a trash clean up crew. Save the prisoners for digging out ditches and cutting brush and weeds.
