Starbucks at Heritage High in Catoosa County?

Rumors that a Starbucks or other chain coffee shop is coming to Heritage High School are just that – rumors.

That’s according to Marissa Chambers, the communications specialist for Catoosa County Public Schools.

A number of Internet posts and comments in the community have indicated a belief that a commercial coffee shop will be opened on-campus to fund some of Heritage High’s expenses.

While that rumor is untrue, Chambers said high school students in some of the system’s business and entrepreneurial classes have discussed opening a student-run coffee shop as part of a class project. She said it was one of several options the group mentioned, including a smoothie shop.

“We have not contracted with any commercial chains at all,” she said. “Some students have kicked around the idea of starting a small business.”

Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School has a similar student-run coffee shop, and the proceeds go back to DECA, the student marketing organization that sponsors it, she said. Ringgold High School doesn’t have a coffee shop.

Heritage High School, off Poplar Springs Road, is scheduled to open in August 2008.

Sounds like there will be a lot more notes going home with kids urging parents to put them on Ritalin like they used to do when my kids were in school. Just kidding

The first mention of the "coffee shop" was in the principal's log - click this link http://www.catoosa.k12.ga.us/hhs/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6
"After meeting with students at LFO, RHS, and HMS, I am confident that Heritage High School will open with an amazing student body. During a 30-40 minute presentation, I met with students who live in the Heritage High attendance zone. These students are currently in the 8th, 9th, or 10th grade and will be sophomores, juniors, and seniors when Heritage High opens in August, 2008. The students were very attentive, respectful, and asked some very intelligent questions. I think they were most impressed with the coffee shop"

I am not sure anyone ever mentioned "Starbucks. I don't believe it was ever a question of whether is was commercially owned or not. The question was "Are you kidding me - a coffee shop in the High School? I don't care what you call it - Ronnie Bradford called it the "Five Star Cafe." I understand fundraising - every time I turn around I am being asked to sell candles, coupon books, candy, etc. I really think everyone knows what a ridiculous idea this is - don't we? Come on people - everyone is talking about it! I don't think anyone is falling for the "spin" that is being spun.

Let's say you give the DECA club time to sell coffee in the coffee shop - are you going to give equal time to other clubs to sell things? Is this going to be a common area that all clubs can use to raise money? Does anyone else see the potential for constant bickering over who gets to use it when and for what?

Regardless, it is a ridiculous idea. I am sure you can find a better use for this area than a coffee shop. Any "extra" space is prime real estate - isn't it? How about a "study nook?" That won't cost any money and it will actually promote learning.
