Georgia is in the midst of a severe drought, and cities are afraid they will soon run out of water without a significant rainfall. What do you think about the drought? Share your tips for saving water, discuss the problem and share your opinions on what the government should do.

The first Brac Greywater Recycling System installed in Atlanta was supplied by Southern Energy Solutions of Marietta, Georgia. This device can save homeowners 30% or more on water cunsumption. Due to plumbing requirements, it is easier to install during new construction or major renovations of a home. www.soenso.com

It is a shame we haven't been more protective of our natural resources. I also think it is time for eviromentalist to get over worrying about certain species of fish, snails, etc. Maybe they are suppose to become extinct. After all, the dinosaur did, what would life be like if they were still roaming the earth???? Maybe we do need to desalinize ocean water, at least for running nuclear plants and things like that, not necessarily for drinking water. It is also time for everyone to take this seriously and quit watering their yards, washing their cars, etc. I even saw someone yesterday in the neighborhood that borders our place outside washing their dog, with the hose on and water running down their driveway. I also think that unless it is a persons only business, we need to shut down car washes, those that are part of gas stations and convenience stores.

Of course, I don't think this is any immediate solution to the problem. For the immediate future we have to rethink how we use our water. We're at the mercy of our own and our neighbors' use of water and mother nature for the near future.

Auditor, you're right the situation is dire. I wonder from where we could pipe the water. The people that live near where the fresh water is will probably fight tooth and nail to have their water piped half way across the country. From what I understand Tennessee and South Carolina are also experiencing droughts and cannot afford to have water piped from the Tennessee River or the Savannah River and would imagine after this drought they would never allow it. Even the Great Lakes have drastically dropped this past summer. I don't know much about desalinization of salt water but think it might be inefficient. Rome obviously is not in such bad shape as Atlanta. I don't know why Atlanta, with their explosive uncontrolled planning, thinks they have more right to the water. I do feel for most of the people, but I saw an newspaper article in AJC the other day with a lady complaing about neighbors up and down her street laying sod with the area having less than 90 days supply of water???!! I hope I don't see too many folks doing that around here. It's not illegal, but I believe it is immoral with our situation.

To force Atlanta, the Rome area, as well as Alabama and Florida would have to use the courts. Atlanta needs to slow down their development which includes Barrow, Paulding, etc. Paulding has to get their water from Cobb which is starting to cut them out. I think close to 90% of Paulding County is on septic systems.

I just saw pictures from Lake Weiss, grass, everywhere water should be. I have never seen this before and I think it is some scary stuff! Imagine if everyone in the drought area (which includes GA, ALA, TENN, NC) had to relocate? This after jobs shut down because of lack of water. It would be a catastrophe unlike any other we have seen. Long term, we need to be able to pipe in water from other areas like we do gas.

I think it is time to force Atlanta to return the water they take from the Etowah back to the Etowah/Coosa system instead of to the Chatahoochee. They have been getting a free ride for too long.
