West Third Street redevelopment
Monday November 5, 2007 11:38:37am
High-rise condominiums, office/retail buildings and a restaurant could soon line the West Third Street side of the Oostanaula River. Construction could begin by next summer after engineering studies are conducted at the site.
Talk of redeveloping the West Third Street area gathered steam a couple years ago, when Northwest GA LLC proposed building a mix of homes, restaurants, retail stores and offices there.
At the time, investors Doc Kibler and Dee Yancey planned to raze Barron Stadium and the nearby tennis courts and relocate the facilities near State Mutual Stadium.
Those plans fell through, however, and the city later acquired a two-acre tract next to the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority.
That cleared up about four acres of riverfront property for redevelopment across from the pedestrian bridge that will soon connect to downtown Rome.
Dempsey Auction Co., Mitchell Glass Co. and Just Sports & Tennis presently sit on the property.

DOSS, THAT THEY WOULD MAKE SURE THAT THE TAX PAYERS OF THE CITY OF ROME WOULD FINANCE HIS PET PROJECT, AND MAKE HIM EVEN RICHER AGAIN AT TAX PAYERS EXCPENCE AND JUST TO MAKE IT VERY CLEAR THIS NEWS PAPER HAS SUPPORTED THIS PROJECT FROM THE TIME MR. DOSS SUGGESTED IT, IN ALMOST DAILY EDITORALS. I JUST DONT GET IT?WHY MR. ACCEPT MR. DOSS AND HIS PARTNER'S PLAN AND JUST FLAT OUT REJECT MR. KEBLERS PLAN? THEY ARE BASICALLY THE SAME PLAN! |

THIS PROJECT IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY REASONS THAT I HAVE NEVER VOTED FOR A S.P.L.O.T.AND I NEVER WILL. AS A COMMISSIONER SAID BACK IN 05 ITS GOING TO HAPPEN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. JUST LIKE THE LIBARY WAS VOTED DOWN,BUT IT WAS BUILT.IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT NAME OR CONNECTIONS, YOU CAN GET WHAT YOU WANT AT TAX PAYERS EXPENCE. IT JUST SEEMS REAL FUNNY TO ME THAT MR. DOSS CAN GET WHAT HE WANTS FROM THE CITY AND COUNTY BUT HE JUST SEEMS TO FALL SHORT ON THE PROMICES HE MAKES TO THE CITY AND COUNTY. |

Brian this isn't the first time they have promised us something that didn't pan out to get splost's passed. It used to be promising that our property taxes would go down. When that didn't work anymore because our property taxes have consistently went up, I guess they had to come up with something else. Remember the stadium. Don't you think that the first plan of putting the stadium near the fair grounds might have gotten votes that it wouldn't have if everyone had known where it would have really been. They knew all along where they were going to put that stadium. They had been bulldozing that land and developing it for about two years before that splost even came up. |
