Stephen Thompson, a volunteer for the Walker County Animal Shelter, is looking for public input on the shelter.

Thompson is overseeing a forum Tuesday night that he hopes will address some important — and probably, some sensitive — issues on the shelter.

According to Thompson, some euthanized dogs, when disposed of, are not completely deceased. Other issues, Thompson said, include the rights of the rescue groups being allowed in the shelter and lack of food for the animals.

Walker County Commissioner Bebe Heiskell said she will attend and answer questions. “I am one of the few county commissioners to put a high priority on the humane treatment of animals,” Heiskell said.

“We have records to show that 45 percent of the dogs are adopted,” she said.

Animal shelter manager Alison Smith said, “What I would like to see is the community step up and take responsibility and get their animals spayed and neutered.”

Individuals attending the debate hope to bring a resolution to the disagreements facing the shelter, which next to the county landfill, at 5118 N. Marble Top Road in Chickamauga.
