Tour de Georgia officials held a press conference this morning to announce the route this year's race will follow, and Rome is not among cities chosen to host the race.
The press conference opened with video of highlights from the past five years of Tour de Georgia. Following the video, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle spoke about the purpose of Tour de Georgia, which raises money for cancer treatment.
"I believe strongly in economic development but I also believe in a healthy lifestyle," he said.
Cagle also announced the host cities, which include Tybee Island, Savannah, Statesboro, Augusta, Washington/Wilkes County, Gainesville/Hall County (Cagle's hometown), Gwinnett County, Dahlonega, Blairsville/Union County, Brasstown and Atlanta.
Rome was not expected to host this year.
“It probably needs to move around the state,” Lisa Smith, executive director of the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau, said in an earlier interview.
The race is scheduled for April 21-27, 2008.

STATE ROADS. I JUST GUESS LISA SMITH WILL JUST HAVE TO TRY TO FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO
WITH HER TIME THIS YEAR?AND AS REPORTED IN THIS PAPER ABOUT ALL OF THE ECONOMIC BOOM
THAT THIS RACE, BRINGS TO THE LOCAL AREA ONE QUESTION, DOES IT OFF SET THE COST OF ALL
EXTRA SALRIES OF NOT ONLY THE P.D.'S BUT ALL OF THE EXTRA PUBLIC WORK'S EMPLOYEES,WHO
HAVE TO MANTAIN AND CLEAN UP AFTER THIS IS OVER, AND WHAT ABOUT THE LOSS TO LOCAL
BUSINESS'ES, FROM VISITORS WHO JUST WILL NOT COME NEAR ROME DURING THIS TIME? AND
THE LOSS OF LOCAL PEOPLE WHO JUST FLAT OUT LEAVE THE AREA ALTOGHTEHR, TO AVOID THIS BIG MESS.
