Purchasing and proclamations in Ringgold
Tuesday January 29, 2008 2:45:57pm
Police cars and proclamations were among Ringgold City Council business Jan. 28.
The council members approved the purchase of a police detective vehicle but will delay a decision regarding the purchase of a regular police vehicle.
Mayor Joe Barger said that Police Chief Charles Land practices a very conservative approach to requesting new equipment for the department. Barger said this detective car and additional vehicles are needed.
Councilmember Bill McMillon requested that the city research purchasing a fully outfitted police car rather than adding equipment after the fact. He also suggested that the city pursue Homeland Security grant funding if the city is eligible.
The council approved a proclamation honoring the Ringgold High School Wrestling Team for its state champion-ship win.
“When the kids work this hard, we need to show them recognition,” said Councilmember Terry Crawford.
The city, like the county commissioners last week, also followed in aligning its support behind Georgia Depart-ment of Transportation Board Chairman Mike Evans approving a proclamation. Evans seat on the board is up for reappointment by the state legislature.
City Manager Dan Wright said that Evans has provided tremendous assistance to the city in its efforts to improve area road issues.
In other business Monday, Jan. 28, at Ringgold City Hall, Ringgold City Council voted unanimously to:
* Deny a request by Debbie Cardin to change zoning from R3, residential, to C1, commercial, for 149 Sparks Street in order to rent office spaces. Council upheld a recommendation to deny from the Ringgold Planning and Zoning Commission.
* Delay a request by Swanson Hollow Road Development for a conditional use for property located at 46 Harley Lane to allow a used motor vehicle dealer offices. Council will seek legal advice regarding request.
* Approve a request by Covenant Life Worship Center to subdivide its property at Battlefield Parkway and Bivens Lane to assist with a construction loan.
* Approve a request by W. R Andrews for a variance to build a fence to store golf carts for sale at LaFayette and Maple streets with a screened section on the LaFayette Street side.
* Approve forwarding a letter to the Catoosa County School Board asking it to request its contractors meet city requests for the Heritage High School sewer system.
* Approve the appointment of Jerry Payne and Melvin McGuffey to the Ringgold Planning and Zoning Commis-sion.
* Approve a resolution relating to an agreement outlining a budget for Hotel/Motel Tax expenditures to conform to requirements of state law.
* Approve a Peavine sewer basin intergovernmental agreement and amendment with Catoosa County establish-ing reimbursement of city salaries for inspectors and mileage.
