ATLANTA -– State Republican Sen. Jeff Mullis of Chickamauga met with a Chattanooga, Tenn.-based delegation Wednesday to accept their gift of several cases of bottled water.

The visit was Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield’s response to Senate Resolution 822, which seeks to correct survey errors along Georgia’s northern border with Tennessee and North Carolina.

“I’m always glad to meet with folks from Chattanooga or any portion of Tennessee that adjoins my district and give them a tour of our great Capitol,” said Sen. Mullis when asked about the gesture. “Though they aren’t in Georgia, citizens in Chattanooga share many common issues with my constituents, like transportation and education. I’d like them to know that my door is always open.”

In what was deemed “Give our Georgia Friends a Drink Day,” Sen. Mullis met with Matt Lea, an aide to Mayor Littlefield, and Chattanooga City Councilman Manuel Rico as they arrived at the Capitol bearing several cases of bottled water. Mr. Lea was dressed in a coonskin cap and garb representative of that worn by American pioneer Davy Crockett. The move came a day after the issuance of a proclamation by Mayor Littlefield offering the state of Georgia a “cool, wet kiss of friendship” in response to SR 822.

“I truly appreciate the Chattanooga group delivering us some clean fresh water, which may have been bottled in Tennessee or Georgia – who knows,” added Sen. Mullis in tongue-in-cheek fashion. “I know this is a somewhat sensitive issue, but I am always glad to meet with our neighbors from Tennessee on friendly terms.”

This year, both Georgia’s state Senate and House of Representatives passed resolutions creating a boundary commission to work with Tennessee and North Carolina to resurvey and mark Georgia’s northern boundary at the 35th parallel. A surveying error in 1818 placed the boundary 1.1 miles south of its actual location, but according to many sources, the survey was never ratified by either the Georgia General Assembly or the U.S. Congress.

American Citizen,
It is hard for me to tell if you are for or against Mr. Mullis. When has he ever done anything postive or with substance he is always sitting on the sideline waiting to get involved after someone else makes something happen.

Juga,
You hit the nail right in the head!

You left out one person though, it's a trio!

Three people think they can run this whole county and all three have huge salaries to do nothing. One person had a job created for them by another person who freely hands out our tax dollars and the third seems to go around assuming the titles of other peoples jobs and also their salary. None of the three could do what they do without the cooperation and coverup by the other two. I hope one day the citizen's of Walker County get tired of giving their money away and put a stop to all this nonsense.

Jeff Mullis loves every minute of the attention he is getting. The only person(s) he cares about is himself and the Commissioner's office who allows him to rip the WC citizens off.

It is so amazing to me that Ron Littlefield can be so "humourous" when in reality he is really being a smart ---. It is funny tbat he didn't mind being in Georgia when Buddy Chapman employed him and he was earning a nice salary from the WC citizens. I suppose now that he is Mayor of Chattanooga those of us in Georgia mean nothing.

Everyones laughing at Georgia now.
Here's the proclamation issued by Littlefield (from the city of Chattanooga website):

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, it has come to pass that the heavens are shut up and a drought of Biblical proportions has been visited upon the Southern United States, and

WHEREAS, the parched and dry conditions have weighed heavily upon the State of Georgia and sorely afflicted those who inhabit the Great City of Atlanta, and

WHEREAS, the leaders of Georgia have assembled like the Children of Israel in the desert, grumbled among themselves and have begun to cast longing eyes toward the north, coveting their neighbor’s assets, and

WHEREAS, the lack of water has led some misguided souls to seek more potent refreshment or for other reasons has resulted in irrational and outrageous actions seeking to move a long established and peaceful boundary, and

WHEREAS, it is deemed better to light a candle than curse the darkness, and better to offer a cool, wet kiss of friendship rather than face a hot and angry legislator gone mad from thirst, and Whereas, it is feared that if today they come for our river, tomorrow they might come for our Jack Daniels or George Dickel,

NOW THEREFORE, In the interest of brotherly love, peace, friendship, mutual prosperity, citywide self promotion, political grandstanding and all that I Ron Littlefield, Mayor of the City of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Do hereby Proclaim that Wednesday, February 27, 2008 shall be known as

"Give Our Georgia Friends a Drink Day”

You know what is even dumber than the Georgia legislators wanting to move the state line 1.1 miles to the north? The fact that Mayor Littlefield is using this as an opportunity to attract attention to himself. The dumb get dumber.

If Georgia needs water why not pump it from South Chickamauga and Lookout creeks that feed into the TN river. Idiots.

Mr. Mullis must have been extremely embarrassed to have had to do that interview while news cameras were rolling. He would not address the issue; just kept saying that he wanted to remain on good terms with his neighbors in TN. He kept passing the buck for the whole thing to a couple of other legislators. He could not have sounded more "aloof". Come on Senator......do something that has a little substance for a change. This is an election year!

Georgia lawmakers have you considered the following issues (assuming this ridiculous idea were to come to fruition):

1. The feelings and attitudes of the people that you propose to annex. I think if they were asked if they want to be a part of Georgia they would probably respond with a colorful 2-word answer. The matter of suddenly being assessed an income tax where they previously had none being only one of their concerns.

2. The cost to the county taxpayers in assimilating the newly acquired property; the increased cost of law enforcement and fire protection being only one of the issues. There are other financial issues as well, and don't try to tell me that the tax base of the newly acquired property would cover it.

3. The cost of relocating millions of gallons of water 120 miles. Bet I know who you've got in mind to pay for that.

Finally, in case anybody hasn't noticed, people are laughing at us.
