Fort Oglethorpe realtor Danny Harkleroad said he never fathomed he would pick up a copy of Playboy magazine and see his daughter on the cover.

On July 13, it will become a reality for the former high school football star, who once lead the Chattanooga area in passing as a quarterback for Chattanooga Valley.

Ashley Harkleroad, 23, daughter of Danny and Tammy Harkleroad, announced after losing in the French Open to Serena Williams last weekend that she had posed and will appear in the August edition of Playboy.

The 61st-ranked American tennis star, who was raised in Flintstone and has called Chickamauga home, said she decided to pose nude in Playboy because she is "proud" of her body. She will become the first tennis player to appear in Playboy.

“I stay in shape and try to stay fit, so like I said, I’m just trying to represent a female athlete and her body," she said. "That can be sexy too, you know.”

Mr. Harkleroad said he and Tammy braced for the worst when the news hit the streets.

However, to their surprise he said the family and Ashley has received "a lot of positive feedback."

"We were really nervous about it," he said. "We've been very surprised with how everyone has been. We've been relieved."

Mr. Harkleroad said he and his wife have already seen a few of the shots, which were done on a four-day session in Los Angeles.

He said Ashley was allowed to choose the photos and said, "they were done in good taste."

Ashley is in France and could not be reached for comment at this time.

Mr. Harkleroad said he understands why she chose to do the shoot. He said her family had no part of her decision and disagreed with her choice.

"(Her mother and I) didn't want her to do it," he said. "I told her, don't do it because you just don't know how it's going to go. My advice to her was don't do it. But all the wheels were going in motion before we could do anything. And she's a grown woman, so what could we say?"

Mr. Harkleroad said although Ashley is "proud of her body,” it's also "taken a beating" during the many matches she has played as an amateur and professional.

He said he doesn't know when, but she eventually wants to get out of tennis and pursue other careers that might include modeling and acting.

Mr. Harkleroad said he hopes Playboy will open some of those doors for her.

One opportunity may have Ashley Harkleroad dancing with joy.

Mr. Harkleroad said the agency that represents her has already been contacted about the possibilities of participating in ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

He did say the family would eventually be invited to Hugh Hefner 's Playboy mansion in the future.

You know, whether we like it or not, sports figures are often role models for kids and I sure wouldn't want my teenage daughter to aspire to be like her. Also, her father said she wants to get into modeling and acting, well if she has to pose nude to open doors, that is pathetic. We already have enough shallow actresses who use their bodies, but can't act their way out of a paper sack.

Jaydubya, are you suggesting that if your 23 year old daughter wanted to pose for Playboy and bare all to the world, you wouldn't have a problem with it??

Strange that only women so far have responded. And may I add not exactly in the positive although they haven't wanted to tar and feather the poor girl yet.

It's not what I would do, yes the world has been spared another unsightly eyesore, but I don't have a problem with anyone else doing it. Strange they always say it was with "taste". What's that mean.

Naked bodies, no biggy. If you really think about it, everyone's the same. If you got it, flaunt it. If you have too much of it, hide it.

Believe it or not, there is a picture of me hanging in the front window of a photography studio in Phoenixville, PA. The guy took it when I was 16 years old. If he saw me now, he'd croak right off!!! ha ha ha ha ha!! Anyway, I wasn't particularly good looking, I don't think, but I think he thought I was. It's that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' thing. I had my picture made for my boyfriend and the photographer loved the outcome. Can you imagine? I would have never thought anyone would have done such a thing!

No, even as a young person, I would not have posed for a Playboy-type magazine. If I were the best looking person or highest paid, I would still decline. I was entirely immoral back then. I'd still have said, "No."

lol, familymom. I was thinking about that yesterday. Thinking back to when I was "new" to adulthood, I would have probably accepted the offer, myself, were it given to me....of course, that would be if I KNEW for certain that my Dad would NEVER EVER find out!

You know, I was thinking about what I would have thought about this back when I was in my early 20s....I am sure it would not have been such a big deal to me back then (my parents would have freaked out, though!)
Of course, now that I am mid-30s and almost 8 mos pregnant, my opinion is much different for many reasons...lol :-)

Grace, very well said and I agree, we love our children no matter what, but we do hope they remember what we taught them.

different people have different values.....and some people have no values at all. :-/

I have three beautiful daughters. I sincerly hope that I never have to hear news like this from any of them. But if I do, I hope that they keep in mind that those were not the values they were taught by me or their father. I hope that they understand that thier mind and heart are much more beautiful than their body ever could be, regardless of how "perfect" it is. (or how "perfectly" it is airbrushed in the photos. lol) I hope that they understand that there are consequences for every action taken...But I also hope that they would remember that their parents love them, regardless of what decisions they make.

Familymom and Msla, I feel the same way, however as these parents say, she is an adult. I feel like you familymom in that your mind is more important than your body, but I don't guess we could convince all the men who buy Playboy of that. Personally, I think it is degrading. Nothing wrong with being proud of your body, mine wasn't so bad at that age, but the only man I wanted to see mine was my husband.

Sigh....
The grass is always greener...

Not for me and those I control but I do have family members who'd jump on that if they could!! ha ha ha!

I hope it's never any of my daughters!!! I do not think this is a true celebration of womanhood...I hope my girls grow up to know their minds are more important than their bodies.
