Shaw Industries’ yarn plant in LaFayette plans to lay off 50 people.

The announcement came Wednesday in a written statement from the company.

The layoff will reduce the plant’s employees to 460.

According to the written statement, the layoffs are "related to increased innovation in the plant's pre-dyed and space-dyed nylon manufacturing, creating the need to streamline its workforce. Additional external factors beyond the control of the company, such as the state of the housing market, are impacting the demand of the products generated at this facility.

"Shaw remains an important corporate citizen in the LaFayette … community and is proud of the role that its employees play in the region. This announcement is not a reflection on the performance of Plant 67 and its employees.

Shaw recently closed its plant in Ringgold, which had about 65 employees. It is closing its plant in Stevenson, Ala., where 400 people are employed. Shaw has a plant in Chickamauga.
