LaFayette man arrested on federal pornography charges

A LaFayette man arrested Monday on federal child pornography charges is a well-known tennis coach who has instructed countless children.

James Bartholomew "Bart" Huskey, 38, has been charged with manufacturing child pornography and uploading it to the Internet.

Patti Scott, LaFayette parks and recreation director, said Husky has served the LaFayette area for several years as a tennis instructor, working with countless children and young people.

She said Huskey rents the department’s tennis courts. “His lessons are offered privately,” Scott said. Huskey is not an employee of either the recreation department or the city of LaFayette, she said.

Authorities said Huskey made a series of child pornography videos depicting his repeated rapes of a young girl over the course of several years.

David Nahmias, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, said, "This defendant allegedly produced a notorious series of images of child sexual abuse that have circulated around the world, with demand from the most hard-core and despicable child porn consumers. The series of videos depict a girl being abused from the time she was approximately 5 years old to when she was 9 years old. Law enforcement around the country has taken extraordinary steps to find this alleged predator, and he has now allegedly been found, in Northwest Georgia."

Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said Huskey is in the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Office in Atlanta.

Husky made an initial court appearance in Atlanta late Tuesday.

Huskey's children have been placed in foster care by local authorities.

The investigation

Using details in some of the photos and videos, law enforcement was able to identify Huskey as the alleged perpetrator of the sexual abuse depicted in the series of images.

Nahmias presented information in court on Tuesday that stated that in June 2006, authorities in Australia informed FBI headquarters’ Innocent Images Unit about an international investigation into the activities of a group of child pornography traders. These traders used sophisticated security measures to protect their trading of child porn from authorities. FBI agents began investigating this group and recovered particularly graphic and disturbing photos and videos depicting sexual abuse of a young girl being traded among the group.

According to a statement released by authorities on Tuesday:

“Over the last two years, the images of this child being violently sexually assaulted grew gradually worse. The Innocent Images Unit of the FBI, working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, (NCMEC), the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Richmond Field Office of the FBI, Maine State Police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Atlanta Field Office of the FBI, worked to identify the victim child, who had been given a specific name by the perpetrator of the abuse."

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Richmond, Virginia, the Innocent Images Unit at FBI Headquarters and the Safe Child Task Force at FBI's Atlanta Division with key investigative assistance from the Internet Crimes Against Children unit of the Maine State Police, and the United States Postal Inspection Service. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Oglethorpe Police Department and the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, along with input and assistance from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), have also provided assistance.

Assistant United States Attorneys Francey Hakes and Corey Steinberg are prosecuting the case.

This case is being brought as part of Project Safe Childhood. In February 2006, the Attorney General launched Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorney's Offices around the country, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet.

Maggie -- I am a little confused about your blog so I am trying to clarify. You say with a lot of therapy it can be controled; what is it exactly that you think can be controled?

Yes, we could lock him up and throw away the key, but that is also a two-sided blade. Georgia has over 50 state facilities now. Their annual budget in the billions. All we can do is build more prisons. 1 out of every 15 Georgia adults are under some sort of correctional supervision right now. We're among the highest in the nation. I do agree in the respect I don't think the guy is sick. I think he's just mean as h..... . He won't have an easy row to hoe though. Even convicts don't like child molesters.

I would love to be able to spend 10 minutes with this guy. He does not deserve to be treated like everyone else. As long as we make excuses - "He's sick" - people will continue to do these stupid acts! Short of ridding the world of pieces like this, I suppose we could give them life in prison without the possibility of parole; thereby ensuring the safety of my nine year old daughter.

This animal will go to federal prison. The feds probably do have air in the cells. I know in GA they don't. They do however have a lot that we are required to give them, by law in Georgia. 3 squares a day, color TV with cable and in some satellites, church services (which a big part of them use only because they think it'll get them out early), visitation on weekends and holidays, $5.00 medical care except for emergency care which is free, GED classes and trade schools, and for those physically able, yes they are required to work. I believe around here only Alabama still has the chain gangs. They should bring them back tomorrow. Recidivism was a lot lower when we had the chain gangs.

I don't think the aclu will try and do anything to stop this person from being proscecuted. However and I am not defending this person in the least, he is mentally ill. Anyone who does things like this is a sick person, not defending him or anyone like him in any way, but it is a sickness. With lots of therapy, it can be controled, but there is no cure for child molestors or others who commit sex crimes.

Fixem, have you ever been in jail? It is not the place you think it is, yes they have air and heat, but it is not as plush as you seem to think. They may not have chain gangs anymore, but they do have to work and even when many get out, they have very strict rules they have to abide by. I have a family member who went to prison, because of drugs and I can tell you it was not a wonderful place by any stretch of the imagination and he is out now, but still under I guess house arrest. He can only go to work and home, no where else and his probation officer keeps a close eye on him and checks on him often.

Personally, I think this man deserves the electric chair, but I am not the judge or jury. Also, this person awful as he is has family and they didn't commit a crime and even though he did, he is still their son, brother, father, husband, etc. and they deserve our compassion and prayers. We also need to be in prayer for the victim and for any other victims out there. My heart breaks at what this little girl has endured for the past three years. My questions are, is she his child and if so, where was the mother, what about the other children that were in the home?

I would also like to take this time to point out what should be obvious, but often it isn't, children are not completely safe anywhere, not even Church. Take the time to know everyone your child comes in contact with and if something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and don't allow your child to be alone with whoever makes you feel uncomfortable. Everyone who works with children should be required to have a background check and there needs to be a national database for those who have commited crimes against children. That being said, we don't need to go overboard and suspect everyone that gives a child a hug, as being a child molestor. Children want and need to be hugged and loved and we don't want to make them afraid of everyone, we, as adults, just need to be alert to those who are in our children's lives.

i am just saying that because seems like every time you see someone that is being tried for a crime anymore there are always someone or some agency/ association that is trying to prevent them from getting their just deserves. the aclu is the main reason that the convicts in prison today are living the high life. no hard labor, no chain gangs, a/c in the cells, televisions, etc. To me, if someone commits a crime and is sentenced to do time, it should not consist of some of the luxuries that some of the law abiding citizens on the outside cant afford. he will more than likely claim some sort of mental illness or something to try and escape punishment, and there will be someone that will be more than willing to help him in his fight. we see it all the time.

I read about this last night, how horrible for this little girl. I have a granddaughter her age and I don't know what I would do to anyone who hurt her like that. This is so sad and sick. I hope they lock him up and throw away the key. Wonder how many other victims there are out there, he didn't just have one. I want to know, though how did this go on for years without him getting caught, especially when he was making video tapes and putting them on the internet???

How can the ACLU help him?

I would love to know what he was involved in besides tennis, church, civic clubs...

Almost any day of the week you could go to the Rec. and see him out there giving children lessons. Isn't it sad that someone can be among us doing such awful things and we never even suspect it.

I know people who have trusted him with their children. This is a man that must pay for what he has done. Someone should call NG she will make him suffer.

This is now the third time that I have said I can't beleive this kind of thing would happen in Lafayette.

what a sad, sad, life that this precious little girl must have been living. i hope that he is raped every day for the rest of his life while he is in prison. this makes me absolutely sick at my stomach. and also, if there is anyway to convict everyone that was in on that website i hope that they suffer the same fate. a very slow painfull death is what they deserve. but, wait and see. the aclu will be all over this guy, protecting him from the courts.

The way the article in the AJC reads it sounds like it was sold to hard core porn viewers. I hope Nancy Grace does get this one because she will not rest until he gets what he deserves. The article that I read says that there was video made in the car that the lady listed drives (2005 Aztec).

I KNOW HUSKY HAD TO BE SICK TO TO THIS, BUT DID HE ALSO MAKE MONEY FROM IT TOO? I AM GLAD I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE PORN BUSINESS. IF HE MADE ONE CENT FROM IT AND HAS IT IN THE BANK I THINK IT SHOULD GO TO THE LITTLE GIRL. SHE WILL NEED IT, SHE HAS A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF HER. I JUST HOPE SOME DAY SHE CAN HAVE A NORMAL LIFE. I NOTICED WHERE IT SAID SHE WAS IN CUSTODY,
THEY DIDN'T SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE MOTHER OF HUSKY'S CHILDREN, THEY DID NAME A HUSKY WOMAN , BUT DIDN'T GIVE HER RELATIONSHIP TO HIM.
WELL, DO YOU THINK THAT THIS WILL BE ON NANCY GRACE TONIGHT?

PURELY speculation..... but I wonder if she is a step-daughter. Has it made national news yet? This sounds like one of those that you see on Nancy Grace. The magnatude of this situation seems to be pretty big with all of the international investigation. There's no telling how much money this sicko made off of terrorizing that little girl.
As much as I preach "awareness" it is still hard for me to comprehend sometimes how these people walk among us, daily, in the grocery stores, at the mall...and we never know who they are until something like this happens.

    oooooo.....
I can think of a few choice words! I think he should be tortured for the rest of his life.

    juga,
they are probably trying to protect the identity of the victim. to give more information on who the victim was, whether related to him or not, would compromise that identity protection. It is VERY sickening to know that he DOES have kids and has been in such close contact with children on a regular basis.

Does anyone know if his children are with family members? I can't imagine having this happen and then be taken away from your family. Was the little girl his own?
