Jeannie Babb Taylor: Better late than never — impeach Bush and Cheney
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:36:02pm
Finally, Democrats are moving to impeach the administration of those now controlling the Oval Office. For nearly eight years, President Bush and Vice President Cheney have lied to the American people. They have launched a war that is unconstitutional and unjustified. They have imprisoned thousands of people — some of them women and children — without due process, and then proceeded to torture them. They have spied on American households. They have laughed while they trashed the concepts of due process, habeas corpus, privacy, the Geneva Convention, and basic decency. No one has held them accountable for this tyrannical behavior — until now.
When Rep. Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House, she became one of the most powerful women in the world. Pelosi has long been critical of the current administration’s “war on terror” and the propaganda that surrounds it. Yet, before she even ascended to her current position, she made it clear that impeaching Bush was not on her agenda. Thus for two years, Democrats have held a majority in Congress and yet have not moved to impeach.
Why did Pelosi think America put Democrats in office? To pat Bush’s back and wink at his crimes?
We can understand the reluctance to impeach. Democrats became quite allergic to the whole process after President Clinton was dragged through impeachment over what should have remained a private affair (pun intended). Millions of dollars were wasted proving that the man had, indeed, cheated on his wife. Conservatives and progressives alike took umbrage at the President’s dalliance with a White House intern — but few Americans considered his personal failure a crime against the country.
Less than a decade later, Republicans are no longer bothered by adultery. Sen. John McCain not only cheated on his wife Carol; when Carol became disabled, he ditched her for a younger model, marrying the blond 25-year-old Cindy within one month of his divorce. Aren’t Republicans, who claim to be the standard-bearers of moral behavior, appalled at McCain’s sexual behavior? On the contrary — they want to make him President of the United States! Adultery is now passé for Republican politicians.
President Clinton was found innocent of the charges leveled against him, yet his impeachment affects Democratic thinking today. Some Democratic leaders apparently forgot that our forefathers established impeachment as an avenue toward justice. Impeachment should not be used as a partisan act of character assassination, as it was in Clinton’s case. But when a president has used the office to thwart the Constitution and commit war crimes, then impeachment is not only justified; it is absolutely necessary.
Thank you, Rep. Kucinich, for having the courage to stand up for justice. At this late stage in Bush’s second term, some are tempted to just let things ride. Some would even say it is “too late” for impeachment.
In a democratic republic, it is never too late to hold our leaders accountable for senseless killing. It is never too late to hold an elected official accountable for propagating 935 documented lies (visit http://www.publicintegrity.org) in order to invade another nation. It is never too late to proclaim that America is about freedom, not imperialism. It is never too late for justice.

That is right we are about freedom. The freedom we are defending now is that of our own and of those who may or may not be able to defend their own. You are also correct that it is never too late for justice. I am cofident that when Osama bin Laden is found that he will be brought to justice and hopefully it will be with a sniper rifle. Did we not go into a "conflict" in Bosnia over genocide and ethnic cleansing? Why was that okay? Oh that's right because we had a Democratic President. The issue in Iraq is that the left has constantly changed their story as to why we are there. First, congress, baby blue's and reasonable red's both voted in favor of the effort in Iraq. So at least at one point, they though we should be there. Then it was that we were there for oil. I would say that since gas is $4.00 a gallon we didn't get much from Iraq. Then it was that we were there for Bush to finish what his dady couldn't. Well, that is great I hope that some of the reasoning is that, but let's face it, we all know somewhere in our heart of American hearts, blue or red, that if someone peed on your leg, whether it be now or years from now sometime your gonna get the urge to pay them back. Thank God for President Bush and for what he stands for! Just remember that no one liked Jefforson or Jackson at the time either and now they are two of America's most well known, true patriot's. |

Labeling those of us as conspiracy theorists that ask questions won't work anymore. Just because someone doesn't take everything at face value that our government tells us only means that we think for ourselves. We are not the minority anymore. Sheez,Don't forgt about the Diebold electronic voting machines conspiracy theory being the main reason MLE..... Anyone ever elected to president in the modern era has been a electorial vote sell out to the highest fund raiser? ***** Some of The Truths about Cynthia McKinney: Criticism of Al Gore During the 2000 presidential campaign, McKinney wrote that "Al Gore's Negro tolerance level has never been too high. I've never known him to have more than one black person around him at any given time." In a January 2004 issue of Jet magazine, McKinney said that the "white, rich Democratic boys club wanted [her] to stay in the back of the bus." Tupac Shakur Records Act McKinney explained her reason for the bill: "The public has the right to know because he was a well-known figure. There is intense public interest in the life and death of Tupac Shakur." Legislation demanding release of records is a more direct route than the tedious process and limited scope of the Freedom of Information Act Articles of impeachment introduced At the end of the 2006 legislative session, McKinney introduced articles of impeachment against President George W. Bush as (H Res 1106), which makes three charges against Bush: manipulating intelligence and lying to justify the war in Iraq, failing to uphold accountability and violating privacy laws with his domestic spying program. The second article also makes charges against Vice President Dick Cheney for helping to "fix" the intelligence in order to justify the Iraq War, and against Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for making false statements concerning Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction program. Capitol Police incident On the morning of March 29, 2006, McKinney entered the Longworth House Office Building's southeast entrance and proceeded past the security checkpoint, walking around the metal detector. Members of Congress have identifying lapel pins and are not required to pass through metal detectors. The officers present failed to recognize McKinney as a member of Congress because she was not wearing the appropriate lapel pin.[34] She proceeded westward down the ground floor hallway and about halfway down the hallway was grabbed by United States Capitol Police officer Paul McKenna, who states that he had been calling after her: "Ma'am, Ma'am!"; at that time it is reported that McKinney struck the officer. Two days later, Officer McKenna filed a police report claiming that McKinney had struck "his chest with a closed fist." In the midst of a media frenzy, McKinney made an apology on the floor of the House of Representatives on April 6, 2006, neither admitting to nor denying the charge, stating only that: "There should not have been any physical contact in this incident." At her April 23, 2006, "District Days" event, frustrated, McKinney stood up and apparently forgot she was still wearing the microphone. Her offscreen comments were captured on tape. She was heard saying, "Oh, crap, now you know what ... they lied to Coz, and Coz is a fool."[38] She was referring to one of her aides, Coz Carson. McKinney realized the embarrassing mistake and returned on screen with the microphone, this time with instructions on what parts of the interview CBS 46 was allowed to use, "anything that is captured by your audio ... that is captured while I'm not seated in this chair is off the record and is not permissible to be used ... is that understood?" From: Wikipedia CYNTHIA TUCKER MY OPINION U.S. Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.), whose supporters are nothing if not naïve. They have turned Theodore Roosevelt's maxim — "Speak softly and carry a big stick" — upside down. McKinney speaks loudly but has accomplished little in her 12 years in Congress. That's because her outrageous rhetoric and loopy antics distance her not only from the Republican majority, but even from many of her Democratic colleagues. ***** Neither a Democrat or Rebublican, she is in the Green Party now, and had considered running for the 2008 Presidential Election. Don't drink the water, it has mind control chemicals put there in it by the government to calm the anarchist revolution. |

How to Steal Elections, and a Nation: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5965670944815984616&q=American%20Blackout&hl=en http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=332622179870559068&q=American%20Blackout&hl=en Hard facts prove that George W Bush is not, and never has been the legitimate President of the United States. Proof that both political parties are complicit in covering the lies we have been fed about 9/11, failure to end the highly lucrative fictitious “War on Terror”, and in failure to impeach the most blatantly obvious criminal politicians in the history of our nation in Congress, the White House, and the current administration and cabinet. This is exactly what I have been telling you!!! The two party system is not going to fix anything. They don’t even intend to try. Unless you are in the district of Ron Paul, or Dennis Kucinich you have no representation in our legislative branch unless you are in favor of destroying America and handing the remains to an elite few. |

The argument not to impeach Bush when Clinton was impeached is getting weaker and weaker and now it is starting to get silly. There is no comparison here. Clinton was found innocent of the whitewater charges after over 4 years of investigation and too much money wasted by the repbulicans in a coup attempt. It didn't work. During the impeachment process, Clinton's approval rating rose to over 80%. You know 80%, Bush's dissaproval rating now. The ones still blaming Clinton for the problems of this administration and defending Bush are getting desperate. To take a joke from the John Stewart Show... the ones that think this administrtion is going in the right direction are on one bus going in one direction. The other 20% percent ride a much smaller bush going in the other. LOL |

AmericanCitizen, that is what I was trying to point out. Read above. The writer says "he" was found innocent. BULL He was President at the time, McCain wasn't. I didn't see that story all over the news. Happened long time ago. But you can't have it one-sided such as this writer always does. That is why they are so whacked out. If you write such an article as the one above then either start out saying this is a comic book entry or a piece of fiction but don't act like you are some kind of political writer speaking the truth. And I don't think I said anything about Repubs being alter boys. They are all human and subject to wrong doing just as you and I are. Yes the list is long, Kennedy 1, 2 & 3, Foley, the governor Spitzer, and on and on. And since when if a person divorces his/her spouse and remarries within a month of doing so does it become a matter of being "appalled at McCain's sexual behavior". I don't see any sexual behavior there. He divorced and remarried, there is no sexual behavior to be appalled at only poor judgement and actions. But I wasn't in their house, and I don't think the writer was either. So I have no firsthand knowledge of any "behavior". |

Oh I guess we are supposed to believe that all Republicans have not lied, cheated, etc..., only the Democrats. Please.......... the argument for Bush's impeachment is a lot stronger than it was for Clinton's impeachment. Yes Clinton made a mistake and even lied in the beginning about it. He has to answer and be accountable for that. Watch that Log in your own eye though. Millions of dollars were wasted trying to prove a man messed around outside his marriage. It is important but he is just the one that got caught. There is probably a long history of Republican and Democrat Presidents (and Sentaors and Congressmen) who have done as much or more. |

Don't even try to compare what McCain did when he WASN'T President to what Clinton did while he WAS president. That is why the above article misses the mark. Can we say slanted, one sided, yellow journalism. I believe we can all now say that Clinton and Monica did have a dalliance. He and his wife both have admitted. For someone to say he was found innocent is to believe that bears don't live in the woods. Something about these folks being unable to tell the truth. |

The Dems do not have the magic "60" votes needed to insure their legislation passes. Hopefully they will get what they need in November and the pendulum will swing "all the way" back. |

If Pelosi is so powerful, and we have more Dems than Repubs, then why haven't they turned this country around. All you heard was the "first 100 days". Nothing happened, things just got worse. Just keep towing the democratic line and see where that will get you. Nobody seems to being doing anything right now. Grace, I tend to side with you on several matters. But we will have to draw the line about Bill and Monica. I am not accepting of this in my White House. That is not what he was elected to do. And then to lie about it. I'm not judging anything that wasn't put out over the airwaves but he made a vow to his wife. He broke that vow. He also made a vow to this country and he broke that one also. He is a liar and delusional. Bush has and is making his own mistakes but so far he hasn't stoop this low. Time will tell. Kucinich is a crackpot. He knows that at this late date there isn't much that can or will be done so he his trying to puff himself up. Where has he been for the last 7 1/2 years, head in the sand. Watch him on TV, he has such a flat affect, he's whacked out. |

I think that there will eventually be investigations into the problems of this administration. With all the things that they have done so far, the congress may be a little wary of trying to impeach him. He is already talking about war with Iran again. He's a loose cannon. Better to wait until he is out of office and has no power. It wouldn't be the first time that a ruler that was off balance was backed into a corner and declared martial law. The president has the power of the military behind him. In other governments where there has been a coup (sp) all you had to do was gain control of the military. Now you might think that I am a conspiracy theorist but I am just saying, it could happen. It has happened before many times. |

Impeachment? Forget it! Bush and Cheney should be sent to the Hague in the Netherlands on January 21, 2009, to await trial for war crimes. |

I agree wholeheartedly. They should also be tried and convicted for high treason and war crimes and promptly executed by hanging. The entire administration has been nothing but a disgrace to America and mankind. |

Hi Grace, I have been checking in from time to time, just haven't had much time to post. AmericanCitizen, If there have been war crimes committed, then it will be determined and justice will be done. Also, just because someone doesn't get punished here on earth, doesn't mean they won't be eventually. None of us regular citizens knows all that has really gone on. We are told what the media wants us to here. We are told what each political party wants us to hear. It is not always easy to determine what is the truth and what isn't, however, the truth always comes out eventually. I think there is much that has been twisted and told to the public, but time will tell. |

If something is wrong ---- it is wrong!! Does not matter when it is dealt with. Just because we are late in Bush's final term does not mean he should not be accountable for his actions. I must agree that the Bush/Cheney issues call for impeachment far more than anything Clinton did. Justice will be served. Maybe not before Jan 20-2009, but it will eventually. |

Oh Please JBT- get over yourself. Why on earth at this late date would anyone go to the time, trouble, and expense to impeach President Bush and why didn't Rep. Kucinich do something long before now if all these things are true? Quite frankly, I don't want Obama or McCain as president of our country, wish we had some other choices. |

I must say, I HAVE wondered about a few of these things....particulary the Clinton scandal as a waste of time, and a waste of money. Very ironic how we tend to look at things differently over the years. More of the things that we used to consider so horrible are now accepted. I still believe it was wrong for Clinton to have his little "affair." However, it would be very naive of me to think that he's the only one who had ever done something like that. In reality, most likely, he's the only one who got "caught." I really don't see how that could be considered a crime against our nation, though. Thanks, JBT for bringing these thoughts back to the front of my mind. I'm not too certain I agree with the impeachment part though. (it IS a little late in the game). |
