Walker’s County’s jobless claims up 342 percent over year ago

LAFAYETTE, Ga. -- Walker County unemployment claims have jumped more 342 percent from a year ago, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.
That’s an increase of 527, from 157 in June 2007 to 684 in June this year.
From May to June this year, claims increased about 20 percent, from 577 in May.
Statewide, claims increased by 1.9 percent. The increase from last year was 35.9 percent.
“The June report is further confirmation of the trend toward higher unemployment,” Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said. “Since the beginning of the year, initial claims have been running in excess of 30 percent over the same period last year. The economic downturn that began with the credit crunch has accelerated with significant costs of food and fuel causing many employers to reduce hiring or eliminate jobs.”

Rayjay5,What difference does that make??? I was married to a woman that turned out to be a different person later. It did not affect who I am. So don't even go there. It is ridiculous. I am not a Coker supporter but good grief get a life! |

I heard today that Bruce Coker's campaign manager was once married to the LaFayette Police officer that helped Parker with his dead wife. Does anyone know if that is true or not? |

And, what position does Mullis hold with economic development?I guess Bruce Coker will get a little more support this time around. Too bad nobody ran against Jay Neal. |

Enough already!I realize we have several supporters of the Commissioner and Jeff Mullis on this blog, but can someone explain to me why we're paying them for doing nothing? I know, I know. They're the best thing since whipped butter. My hat is off to all the powers that be in Walker County. They may as well spend a little of the money, before it runs out, and build a fence around the entire county. Block it off from the rest of civilazation, because it won't be long before we're a ghost town. Our leaders are a joke. Where's the Chamber of Commerce during all of this? Oh! I'm sorry. You have to have commerce for the Chamber to be totally effective. Shaw closes down. The chemical plant in Kensington closes down. What businesses aren't closing down are burning down. Wait a minute? We can spend all day hunting non-existant jobs until we get hungry and have absolutely no problem finding a place to eat. On the other hand they're only paying minimum wage and will be going out of business pretty soon too if nobody has jobs. The only safe job around here is law enforcement (in the respect that the worse the economy gets the more crimes are going to be committed). Maybe Mr. Mullis can throw a few dollars into the kitty. Don't hold your breath. Someone needs to get off their keesters and get some jobs coming into the county. BeBe, in case you're unable to figure it out, a 342% increase in unemployment claims from last year simply means WE'RE GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION!!!!! You know, backwards instead of forward. Congratulations! VWN |
