Search underway for missing Rock Spring woman
Wednesday July 23, 2008 8:33:05am
Authorities continued Wednesday to search for a Walker County woman missing since Monday morning and whose car was found abandoned at Cloudland Canyon State Park on Lookout Mountain.
Judy Payne, 45, of Rock Spring was last seen Monday about 7 a.m.
Kim Hatcher, public affairs coordinator with the Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites, said the search continued Wednesday with ground crews and dogs in the 3,500-acre park.
On Wednesday morning about 40 people began searching, Hatcher said. That number was expected to fluctuate as some went off duty and others came on duty, she said.
“Cloudland Canyon is an extremely rugged park,” Hatcher said. “It is probably one of the most rugged parks in Georgia, so it is very difficult on searchers and the search dogs as well. It is difficult when it so wet, and it is slick -- especially the rocks are slick. You’ve got some really steep vertical cliffs here. It takes much longer to search this terrain than it would terrain that isn’t so steep. It is a difficult task that these men and women are tackling right now.”
In a news conference shortly before noon Wednesday (see video of conference below):
Hatcher said ground search crews stopped searching at dark on Tuesday, while search dog crews continued throughout the night.
Rain has hindered the search because it is pushing any possible scent down into the canyon, Hatcher said.
Payne has a husband, Mark, and two adult children, she said.
Payne may have been seen Monday around noon wearing a pink or red outfit, but that sighting is unconfirmed, Hatcher said.
Officials don’t know if Payne had her cell phone with her.
Nothing had been found by searchers and no scent had been picked up by the search dogs, Hatcher said.
Before Wednesday’s news conference, Hatcher said crews so far had searched along main trails and cliffs in a 10-mile area.
She said Payne worked for the park as a clerk in the main office for a short time about seven years ago. She said that fact probably doesn’t factor into the events, including Payne’s familiarity with the terrain, since Payne worked there only a short time and it was so long ago.
Hatcher said searchers are using a grid system that takes into account how far Payne might have traveled in a circular distance during the period she has been missing.
A park ranger found Payne’s car, a black late-model Mazda Miata convertible, in the park on Lookout Mountain in Dade County about 10:30 p.m. Monday. Officials then notified Payne’s husband.
Payne’s husband told authorities his wife was last seen about 7 a.m. Monday when she left for work.
Crews searched trails for her Monday night and Tuesday, including a helicopter crew on Tuesday. Those involved in the search include the Dade County Sheriff’s Department, park rangers, an aviation unit from Georgia State Patrol post in LaFayette, the FBI and area fire departments.
Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to call the Dade County Sheriff’s Department at (706) 657-4111.

I'm sorry, but it's obvious local law enforcement, in an effort to close each and every case in record time, goes with the premise that everything is an accident no matter what the circumstances or who is involved and assumes the public is going to take their findings as gospel. A very attractive lady, mid-forties, lunch in car, supposed to be at work, doesn't call in, husband doesn't know where she's at, shows up in the middle of nowhere, all by herself, at the bottom of a 300 ft. cliff. Case solved! Accident! Accounts provided demonstrate Mrs. Payne loved to hike. That being said, as an avid hiker, she had enough sense not to do what they're claiming she did. What hiker is going to hike on the very edge of a 300 ft. cliff with nothing in between them and eternity but air? Dade County? Sounds like a good place for a Sheriff. With the GBI involved, don't expect any forthcoming information.VWN |

Thank God the GBI was called in. That Sheriff appears to be an idiot. He's already been on TV calling it an accident before the investigation is complete. Dade has a history of incompetent sheriffs. |

AKC-If you have information about a possible motive, you need to report it to the Dade County Sheriff's department. Whether it is rumor or not, it needs to be checked out by investigators. |

From my understanding........... none of the living close to her will give a statement......... I will say this is a rumor.................. That she did have a boy friend......... who know if this boyfriend didn't do it... There is defently something fishy about this case. AKC |

She lived in Catlett, worked in Rossville and just happened to go hiking in Cloudland which is not exactly on the way. She didn't call in to work. When did the husband report her missing? |

I hope investigators are checking out her husband's alibi (Where was he on the morning she went missing? Does he have any mud or plants on his shoes from the park?). It seems like these "accidents" have recently turned out to be foul-play by a husband or boyfriend. |

Them dogs must not be all they are set out to be................... Why didn't the dogs pick up on her smell???????????????? 4 days she has been out there and in 98 degrees you know she was done smelling. OMG I was hoping everything would come out ok.......... There is other questions why did she not tell her husband where she was going? She didnt even call into work,,,,,there is so many unanswered questions in this case........ She is 46 why would she be crossing the guard rale to go on a trail that she should be on in the first place? So many questions to be answered. AMC |

That is so true. It is almost like they are not telling all of the info they know......... If she lives in lafayette, and she works in Ringgold and never went to work that proble means she or they came straight over the mountain...... or someone drove her car up there and parked it there....... If they are treating it as a missing persons case. Why did they haul the husbands truck in for inspection?????? AKC |

There is a $3.00 charge to park at the canyon. Surely someone has to know when she arrived and if she was alone. Wonder why that hasn't been brought up ???? |

This is really terrible. It does not look good for sure.I have a thought~or~a question? If the last time that Judy Payne was seen by her husband was at 7a.m. when she left for work, then WHERE did he think she was when the time came for her to be home from work? AND.....she was not home??? Did he call her work looking for her? Does she have a cell phone that he would have called? Something very strange here...... |

They did take the husbands truck in for inspection........... He has been there with them searching........ I drove bye yesturday and seen a man looking on the ground at the main gate I got cold chills all over me. But it looked like it might have been her husband. Not saying it was Im not sure............. It was in daylight that this happen someone had to see something. Someone some where. They said that a lady had given them a picture with her car in it. At less 1 person has come forward with some info....... this should give them a time frame of when she was there........... I hope she is found and in good faith........... AKC |

Deja vu. Have they questioned the husband, checked his car or whereabouts? Not saying there is foul play but these kinds of things have a way of going that way. Heard that they were going to check another park on Lookout Mountain. |
