Our current economic problems can be traced all the way back to VOO DOO Economics thought up by Reagan. It's the old hoax of "trickle down" economics. Supposedly, if you don't tax the rich, they'll stimulate the economy by hiring people and spending more money to stimulate markets...... It really is a hoax! What happened in this country was that we managed to wipe out the backbone of the ecoonomy, the middle class. We have record numbers of both millionaires and those in poverty. The second reason we have a bad economy is because we've become a pure "consumer economy" driven solely by what can be bought and sold. We are bombarded daily with commercials that tell us we are "less than" and "need more". People really don't need more things, but our economy would come to a halt if nobody bought anything. That's how the mortgage industry ruined us. We talked everybody into the notion that we should all be homeowners.... |

Slynay, first of all, no progressive income tax has ever been levied on GROSS income. Where did you go to school? All taxes are paid on adjusted gross incomes. If you're running a business, you also need to learn that you subtract your expenses before you calculate your profit....And, nice try on blaming any upcoming depression on Obama! This is 2008 and Bush put us here. Barney Frank and Acorn simply tried to end the practice of red lining in the mortgage industry. It was the hot shot mortgage bankers who figured out how to gouge economically deficient buyers who would fall for their slick sales pitch. They in turn, found equally greedy people within their own mortgage banking industry to build this house of cards. They all walked away with millions. The only ones left to pay for all the problems now is the same old scape goat - the middle class. I'll give you that the orignal southern racists were the Dems. That changed, however, with JFK and LBJ and has been the other way around since then. |

Voterb, point well taken on my choice of words "came from nothing" because I should have said someone who came up the hardest way possible in America - a man born of a bi-racial marriage and abandoned by his father. Much different being behind this large 8 ball as opposed to being raised as an officer's kid on a naval base as McCain was.We differ on our visions of America in that we now live in an ever increasingly global world. America's leader must be able to communicate and negotiate on a global level. Only a global leader is right for the 21st century. |

Fixem, Joe Porter's letter was entirely predictable....He wants answers as to WHAT CHANGE and WHY OBAMA? I'll give you my answer....First, I'm embarassed that our country has been headed by a mediocre mind with self-serving motives and the audacity to lie us into a needless war. I believe he should be tried for treason. I'll give John McCain his due on being a POW and facing that challenge with uncommon valor. I do not, however, believe that qualifies anyone to be President. He claims, "...I know how to win this war", but has never won one. He claims, "I know how to get Bin Ladin", but hasn't shared that with anyone else in the last 7 years. I believe he is a very dangerous man who has anger issues and probably unresolved personality disorders from his experience as a POW. I've seen evidence that his mind is slipping and I, for one, can't imagine this country under either him with his fading mind or under Palen with her total lack of grasp of anything outside the state of Alaska. Your Joe Porter still spouts that Obama is a Muslim, which is not only ignorant, but entirely bigoted. He is not now nor has ever been a Muslim, and all of you know it. You just forgot how to campaign in elections without employing Swift Boat tactics of lies and fear tactics. We need someone who works in office on behalf of the majority of the American public, not the top 1% of the richest Americans. McCain would continue all of Bush's tax cuts for the rich and wants desperately to reduce or eliminate Social Security, MediCare, and any use of money for the assurance of national healthcare. I trust a person who came up from nothing rather than the grandson and son of Admirals. The priviledged class does not get it. I trust a person who won scholarships based on brains to get into good schools rather than someone who was destined from birth to attend Annapolis. I trust a person who leaves his campaign to attend to an ailing grandmother moreso than one who grandstands that he is "suspending" his campaign to dash off to Washington to solve the economic crisis. We no longer trust Republicans - it's that plain and simple! |

I'm voting for PJ Wilson because I'm tired of Bebe's lies. She didn't contract with that gym because of lower insurance rates. She did it because they were going to have to vacate the lease at the Fieldstone Farms property that Bebe and her friends back. Now they have their rent paid for the next two years. PJ promises to go out on bids, have outside audits, and clean up the books. We don't want the world to fall in on us all of the sudden one day like it did with Wall Street. |

What I saw at Tuesday night's forum was much the same as with the national election scenario. The incumbants bragged about things they had no control over and the challengers repeatedly called for change. My favorite speach was made by Bebe Heiskell who kept using the phrase, "...my goal is to provide the hightest quality service for the lowest possible cost." Very funny if you realize this woman does not believe in going out for bid on anythibng called a "service" or is under $100K. How would she know what the lowest possible cost is????? |

Slynay, without government collecting taxes how do you think the freight on those trucks would get to market? Yep, those pesky government funded highways and interstates...Those taxes also keep this a free market by paying for defense of the country. Right now the top 1% of the population has more wealth than 95% of the population. Taxes on the lower 50% of the population basically pays the interest on our debt. So who would you tax to pay for government services (roads, schools, parks, libraries, airports, etc.)? Would you rather have it "every man for himself" and wait for the rich to have no more highways on which to drive their Hummers or no more airports for them to land their Gulfstreams? It's great to start your own business, but you can't forget that a lot has already been provided for you through tax dollars that have paved the way for your success. We all pay our dues. No exceptions. |

The economic rescue plan just approved by Congress is a joke and had nothing to do with "Main Street".The reason it passed is that Congress is full of very wealthy people who knew their fortunes were tied to the rise or fall of Wall Street. To them "putting the country first" really meant putting the rich first. Nothing is more stupid right now than continuing the tax breaks for the wealthy and failing to impose windfall profits taxes on oil companies. These are Bush tactics and look where it got us....This is what McCain is promising. Just more of the same. Wake up! |

I disagree with VWN in that I do believe Walker County is an anomoly. The racism is rampant and the intimidation of those who openly support Obama is overt. Thank goodness the voting booth is private! Many good people will take great personal satisfaction in casting their vote for the Democrats. The Republican party has hoodwinked poor, ignorant people by teaching them that it's not patriotic to support the Democrats. The truth is quite the opposite. Poor people should never vote Republican because all they are doing is making the rich richer. Furthermore, a democracy only exists when people feel safe in voicing their true opinions. Those who remove signs from people's yards are clearly saying it's not okay to have a different opinion. Republicans in Walker County are practicing Fascism at it worst. |

For Walker County the worst thing we could do is reelect Mullis and Heiskell. They have both forgotten they work for the taxpayers. Every time there's a photo op concerning anything in the area you'll see these two in the photo acting like they had something to do with good news. Their backers and money people just keep getting richer and richer due to the land deals, zoning, and priorities for tax money.
Again, compare their net worth before and after public office and you'll see what the priorities really are.
