Twinkie,Good post (as usual) :-) I did not like what Michelle said either; however, I have seen her many times and read a great deal about her and I like her. I don't think there is a politician (or ANYONE for that matter) that hasn't said something they regret. I know Senator McCain and Governor Palin would love to take back some of their statements, and poor 'ol Joe Biden (bless his heart) he just keeps putting his foot in his mouth :-) I do think Obama is uniquely qualified from one perspective. Because his mother was white, his father black, raised by his white grandparents, etc., etc., I think he could represent all of us. What do you think about his background? |

Regarding Palin:I believe she was wrong. I can sympathize with her anger toward her brother-in-law. I would be so mad if someone did that to my sister! Whew!!! However, I have to look at two issues. 1) Did Gov. Palin and her family go through the correct channels (police, court, etc.) in regards to her brother-in-law? If so, was he found guilty? 2) No elected official has the right to use their power to retaliate against someone who has not been proven guilty in a court of law. Just my opinion . . . |

Twinkie,We have found many commonalities’. I enjoy reading your posts and I think we communicate really well, so I would like to attempt to answer the Rev. Wright issues. I wish he hadn't but I kinda' understand why. My family attended a church for many years and I did not agree with SEVERAL of my pastor's views. Matter of fact, some of them was extremely offensive to me. At every opportunity, I shared my counter-views with him. The reason we stayed at the church so long was because of their youth program. We had two children that were very active in the youth group and actually both accepted Christ during that time. The youth minister and other church leaders did not believe in our pastor's extreme opinions and we had so many good friendships in the church if I had it to do over again would I leave the church? Not sure. Perhaps I had to suffer through those turbulent times so my children could make their faith decisions. Perhaps God put me in this church to try and witness to the pastor? Just not sure. I do believe that Obama is a Christian and I believe he loves his family. Whether we are black, white, Asian, Hispanic, etc., etc., I think the majority of us love our children and want the best for them. I know my husband and I talked to our children during the time we attended the church I mentioned earlier. We explained why we disagreed with the pastor and why we believed the way we did. Obama did not agree with Rev. Wright's views on many, many things and discussed them with him. I am actually impressed that Obama was able to leave the church. I know what a gut-wrenching decision it was when my family changed our memberships. Very tough to do. Sorry for the long post :-) |

Maggie,I am interested in how you feel about Governor Palin running for office since she has small children (especially the four-month old special needs angel). Thank you. |

Excellent post, Twinkie. It is a time to study our choices, uh? I am voting for Obama because I truly believe he has the right approach for the working people. I don't agree with everything on the Democratic ticket, but I support the majority of their issues. I just cannot vote for McCain for a couple of reasons. One, I agree with you on the trust factor. Secondly, I worked with a Republican from Capitol Hill for many years. He told me four years ago that the Republicans' greatest fear was that McCain would be their candidate in 2008. He said McCain was a back-stabber and would do anything to "further his agenda". He also talked extensively about his temper which scares me in regards to that 3:00 a.m. phone call analogy. The friend who told me this was a lifelong Republican and had worked on Capitol Hill for many, many years, so I tend to believe his prediction. While I don't believe in abortion, I do believe in a woman's right to choose in certain cases. My beliefs are based on a situation I knew of many years ago before abortion was legalized. A young girl was raped by her father and became pregnant. Her father forced her to have an abortion and because it was illegal at the time, she had to go to a motel in East Ridge and the procedure was done by a quack and she almost died. I am an old woman but I never forgot that story. I know there are good and bad sides to everything and I try to keep an open mind but I guess when you've lived as long as I have, you tend to base your opinions on your life experiences. Am enjoying the cordial conversation! Thank you. |

1. I think it is fine for a candidate to send a representative to read a statement.2. I do not think it is appropriate to have a Chamber Representative read the statement. 3. I do not think it is fair for a candidate to send a stand in to "debate". 4. I especially do not think highly of a candidate who continually is a "no show" at every public debate (Mullis). 5. In the future, I would hope that the Chamber is forthcoming about the rules and ensures that EVERY candidate receives an invitation to participate. |

I read the posts and am amazed that we all live within a few miles of one another and have such distain for our neighbors.
I am going back to what I feel I should do and that is try to live the best life I can, help those in need and keep an open mind. Today people are being born, dying, finding out they have cancer, killing and being killed.
There is work to be done.
God Bless.
