In every college education class, the professors argue against "teaching toward the test." Then, you have some low-performing politician, who has never taught in a classroom, come along and develope a new catch phrase that sounds good, like "No Child Left Behind," which puts extensive undue burdens on the classroom teacher and restricts her talents she has devoted her life to learning and using. Then, when students don't put forth the effort to pass their classes nor the CRCT, they are placed on into the next grade because there are always some "extenuating circumstances" that caused them to do poorly. It's never their fault. It's never their poor attitudes. It's never lack of parental support. It's never the fact that they're simply not ready to move on to the next level. It's always someone else's fault. So, let's hold a meeting with the parent, whom the principal doesn't want to offend, because they might go to the school board; the principal, by whom the teacher is intimidated to not disagree, because her contract is on the line; and the teacher. So, basically, if the parent wants the unprepared student to go on to the next grade, they go. Then, when and if that student somehow finishes high school, or if they drop out, the school system is held accountable. The drop out rate is splattered all over the newspapers and television. Potential employers and/or college entrance officials question the effectiveness of the local school system. And, the teachers and school system may be considered to be "below standard." Then, these same politicians come back and want to offer vouchers so the students at these "below standard" schools can choose to go to a private school. Am I the only one who sees a problem with this system? |

I think the problem here lies with the older crowd who had desegregation forced on them and are still quite bitter over it. They really don't want to use the N-word, except in private. But, they will jump all over the chance at using the M-word if it means slamming a black person. Just a modern form of racism. |

Exactly AC! Just pointing out the irony of it all. I have friends who are Catholic. I have nothing against them at all. Mother Teresa is actually a hero of mine. |

BTW, when was the Walgreen's opened? Isn't that his land it is on? Isn't that a conflict of interest to be in his position and benefit from luring a business to the county and profiting from it? |

Oh, don't you worry Mr. Bentley. Mr. Clark does his dirty work behind closed doors. He hires and appoints the right people to do his dirty work for him. He will come out smelling like a rose every time. Remember the YMCA? He didn't have anything to do with that Tax Assessor's Office. LOL!!!!!! |

And, locally, isn't it ironic how most Republican evangelicals think the world of TV preachers like John Hagee and James Dobson, then overwhelmingly vote for Keith Greene, a Roman Catholic, who sends his kids to a private Catholic school (OLPH). Don't get me wrong. OLPH is a very good school, and Mr. Greene's religion should have nothing to do with his politics. These two "preachers" have been very outspoken against the Catholic church for years. Obviously, a lot of people don't do their homework. I just thought the irony was very interesting! |

Yeah, I heard Ol' Saxby Shameless was coming to Dalton. He better get down here and kiss a few babies, like Nathan NoDeal did a few weeks ago. With all the ousting of incumbents going on lately, I'll bet they are getting nervous. Somebody might start taxing their millions if they aren't careful.Quite frankly, I'd like to see a lot of fresh faces in office. Jim Martin for US Senate and Jeff Scott for US Congress would be a great start!!! |

Sounds like Slynay and fixem are one and the same. Isn't it ironic that he and others like him are still trying to "beat a dead horse," if you will, by harping that "ALL Democrats are tax and spend liberals?" First, a "liberal" is defined as "one who desires or accepts change." So, everybody voting against Bill Clark must be a liberal, because they want a change. Second, has anyone checked our national debt lately? It's in the trillions of dollars. We owe TRILLIONS of dollars. But, Bush and other republicans won't raise taxes. They'll even send you a rebate in the form of a Economic Stimulus Package. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed having an extra tax refund. But, my question is if you don't raise somebody's taxes, how do you plan on paying off this debt before our country collapses economically? Oldsoldier, I may not always agree with all your posts, but that last one was incredible. May I suggest brushing it up a little grammatically and sending it to the Times-Free Press' Letter to the Editor, or even a major national magazine. Your comments are exactly what ALL Americans need to read or hear. The TRUTH! Instead of all the far-left liberal or the far-right false-profit propaganda. And, Ringgoldone needs to brush up on his history. His comment, "The separation of church and state is only to keep the state out of the church not the church out of government and its policies," is wrong and quite misleading. If you remember, the Church of England controlled the Government and its policies. And, the Catholic Church influenced and controlled many other European countries prior to our Declaration of Independence. The TRUTH is that our founding fathers wanted the government kept out of the church as well as the church being kept out of the government. Bush's Faith-Based Initiative has undermined that part of our Constitution. But, undermining the Constitution has been what he does best. And, to the supporters of James Dobson, John Hagee, Pat Robertson, John Tisdale, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Jeremiah Wright and any other of these politically motivated false-profit demogogues, Christianity is supposed to teach "Faith, Hope, and Love." And, if someone out there is willing to help me find it in the New Testament, please show me where "Christian Values" include "hate and judgement," as these people are preaching from their pulpits and on their television shows and websites. I haven't been able to find it anywhere unless I flip back to the Old Testament. |

If that is true, don't even make an attempt at comparing "Colonel" Clark's service to Greene's. |

Perhaps the answer to your last question would be that there are several narrow-minded, right-wing extremist, pseudo-Christians on here who only respond if it is religion-related.
Obviously, Gatorfan's arrogant ignorance has offended several who have taken him to task on the issue of supporting those who are less fortunate than he. He obviously disagrees with the quote, "from those who have more, more is expected."
For those who constantly profess their Christianity more than they exhibit it, might I suggest a few scriptures to check up on? Proverbs 10:15, Job 27:19, Matthew 19:23 and 22:21, Mark 12:17, Luke 18:25 and 20:25. I could look up a many more, but it's my bedtime and I just wanted to add a little to this circus.
