WalkerMommy: based on some of your previous posts, you are more familiar with the fire department than I am. Can you shed some additional light on what all the fire department staff does for our citizens, other than of course fight fires, save lives, put their life on the line each and every day that there is a fire? To address the bells and whistles, I don't know for sure that it is the same with fire trucks, but I know that when you purchase say a new car, if you want a sunroof, it may come with a 5 disc CD changer and the two are not available seperately. This could be the case with the so called "bells and whistles" on the fire trucks. I am tickled to death to have the level of service provided by our fire department and I for one hate it that they are not more appreciated for putting their lives on the line for our citizens. To me this is certainly, in Walker County for some reason, a thankless job. So from me to the Fire Department --------- THANK YOU GUYS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have lived in Walker County all of my life, other than college, and I wouldn't want to raise my family anywhere else. I know that we have had a lot of tragedy in our community, but you know, tragedy should bring our community closer and today it seems that it divides. I hate that. I wish that we could stop this he said she said stuff. I wish that we didn't have to choose a party for our local leaders. I always vote for the person and hate it that I had to choose the republican ticket to vote for Bebe and could not support some of the candidates on the democratic ticket for other offices. But I did feel strongly that Bebe deserves to be back in so I had to choose. (Yes I've already voted!!!!)

BEBE FOR COMMISSIONER!!!!!!!!!BEBE FOR COMMISSIONER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BEBE FOR COMMISSIONER!!!!!!!!

There is always going to be different views by everyone as to what is wasteful spending. We are just going to have to agree to disagree on this issue. One may consider buying new vehicles wasteful, but I on the other hand would consider the fact that the road crews had to waste time going and picking up employees on the side of the road where one of the old vehicles had overheated and quit running wasteful. You may consider buying better equipment for the fire department wasteful, but I for one want the best money can buy to save my family and my home in the event of a fire. If you cut back our full-time fire department staff, who is going to be there to operate the life saving diffibulators when a person stops there in case of an emergency. Like I said, we will just have to agree to disagree.

Thank you Jsprayberry!

And just to shed some light for anyone who is mathimatically challenged. Let's just say that Mullis does make $80,000 a year from NWGJD, which I am still not convinced that he does because I have not seen any evidence, but let's just say he does for example. There are 52 weeks in a year with 5 working days per week, which equals 260 working days a year, not counting any holidays. Divide $80,000 by 260 days, this equals $307.69 per day, not including deductions. $1088 per day, PLEASE!!!! I can guarantee you if any one of you were offered either of these pays, qualified or not, you would jump at the opportunity. AGAIN, Mullis is also human.

This blog really should be about the candidates and the issues, not each of us posting. sbrown, usafvet, gentlespirit, WalkerMommy, and whoever else is posting, you guys vote for whom ever you so choose and I for one will never judge you for it. My hopes for all of you are that you listen to the facts and not rumors. I don't know what happened with the driving of our Commissioner, but you know what?! SHE IS HUMAN! WE ALL make mistakes and we have all been in near accidents whether our fault or someone elses. I for one do not hold this against her outstanding accomplishments and triumphs as OUR commissioner. As you can all probably tell by a lot of my posts, I work closely with the County Government. If all of you could see the difference in almost ALL of the County offices since Bebe took office, you would truely be amazed. I wish that all of you could just see what I see. A lot of people are talking about things that the County has bought over the eight years, but can you imagine doing a job with a typewritter that you need a computer to accomplish, this is just an example of how it use to be...now the County staff has computers to work with. (THIS IS AN ANALOGY) I know that many of you can not understand and will not understand, but I challenge each of you posting to visit ANY County office that is overseen by Commissioner Heiskell and ask questions, a lot of questions, to educate yourself on how far Ms. Bebe has taken our County. I AM IMPRESSED and support her whole heartedly.

BEBE FOR COMISSIONER!!!!!!!!!Andy for Nice Guy and Great Mechanic!!! P.J. for Friend of Ron Littlefield (It was my understanding that we voted him out last time, we sure don't want him back in)!!!

Mephitical means --- Of, relating to, or resembling mephitis; poisonous or foul-smelling.

macrologist means --- a dull conversationalist, usually met at dinners and parties

Sorry, just trying to be funny! I couldn't resist. Tell me that I am not the only one that was wondering what in the heck a mephitical macrologist meant!! LOL!

Just a light joke JTScott, not trying to be smart.

mdsp: I get what you are saying, but you do understand that the County employees and the County buses are not funded by the same pot of money don't you.?!.?! There is a fuel log. Every time an employee gets gas at the road department you have to enter the mileage before it will let you fuel up I believe. The hard part would be for those that have jobs that require the use of the vehicle throughout the day. I would certainly be easy to check the log on those that use it to drive home and back, but a bit more difficult if the vehicle is used for say inspections, checking job sites, checking complaints, addressing, driving to different offices buildings throughout the county during the day, etc. It isn't impossible, but a bit more difficult. I'm not sure about the schools closing, I don't remember that, but it doesn't mean it didn't happen. But again, please understand that the funds for county buses and the funds for the County Government are a different pool of money. The funds are not interchangable (sp?). I am sure everyone would agree that our students are more important, but County government funds can not provide fuel for school buses. There is also no question that using your County Car for personal use is not a good thing and anyone who does should be repremanded (sp?) (unless of course it is the commissioner who is on the job 24 hours a day 7 days a week and is ALWAYS.

mdsp and shadow: The Central of Georgia Railroad is listed as the owner of the rail spur, which includes approximately 2 acres.

mdsp: it is my understanding that some of the county employees negotiated driving a county car instead of a higher salary. Would you support taking the cars away and compensating those employees for not having a car? I agree that there are some employees that take advantage of having a car and they do use it as a personal vehicle and for that I do agree that those people should be ashamed. But there are those county employees that do have county cars and drive them only for work purposes. If this was part of the agreement for their salary and they do not use it for personal use, I don't feel that these employees have anything to be ashamed of.

I believe that Walker County needs more overnight accomodations all over the County. This would generate sooooo much sales tax revenue if tourist could spend the night here. Have any of you ever been to Brass Town. It is absolutely beautiful. From the roads and many of the hills, you can't even tell that there is a Lodge, overnight cabins, etc. in the area. It is the most peaceful place that I have had the pleasure to visit. IF what the state and county want to do with Mountain Cove properties is like Brass Town, I am ALL for it and believe that the people that MDSP is referring to with the poll would probably feel the same way. What I don't want to see is a huge, overbearing, commerciallized metropolis. It needs to be blended with nature for everyone to enjoy. Right now, we can only visit and leave unless you want to rough it and I for one am not into roughing it, but I would love to be able to visit and spend the night, even though I live here. I feel very certain that Commissioner Heiskell feels exactly the same way that I do about the protection of that property. She cares way to much about Walker County to want to see this valuable resource wasted. I believe that she feels that if the state has it that it will be even better protected than if a developer were to purchase it. The previous owner wanted to divide it up into 10 acre tracts. This is certainly not want anyone wants.

WalkerMommy: Thanks. I try, sometimes I let my emotions get the better of me, but I do try to state only the facts. Here is the information I have found in the messenger regarding the cost of the rail spur...

"In 2005, construction of a $500,000 rail spur to accommodate the PlyMart facility and other businesses in the Rock Spring area was completed. About $160,000 of the spur’s cost was paid for with a federal Appalachian Regional Commission grant. The remainder was paid with local special-purpose local-option sales tax (SPLOST) funds and grants from the Georgia Department of Transportation."
